I love designing and illustrating book covers. There’s something so magical about being able to live in a book. I love to read a book, walk in the shoes of the author and imagine myself being a part of the world.
Which book has stayed with you?
A special shout out to one of my favourite book cover designers Micaela Alcaino for always being so inspiring 💪🥰

Put down your phone. Talk to people.
This is the advice I shared with Creative Boom for their latest article: 6 pieces of advice for juniors in their first month — that the rest of us might need to hear too.
We spend so much of our creative lives looking at screens, scrolling, posting and trying to build connections online that sometimes we forget to actually connect with the people standing right in front of us.
Some of my best ideas, conversations and opportunities haven’t come from an algorithm.
They’ve come from talking to someone.
Going to an event.
Asking someone about their work.
Listening to their story.
Having a laugh.
Being curious.
As a book cover illustrator, listening is at the heart of what I do. Every author brings their own experiences, emotions and perspective to a story, and I can’t understand that by simply looking at a screen.
I have to listen.
And I think creativity needs that human input.
So my advice isn’t just for juniors:
Put the phone down occasionally.
Look up.
Talk to people.
Be curious.
Listen.
You never know what conversation might change the direction of your creative life. ❤️
Thank you, Creative Boom, for including my advice alongside such brilliant creatives.
What is one piece of advice you’d give someone starting out in the creative or any other industries?

Hands on heart this was the most rewarding thing I have done in my illustration career. To be in a position to give advice to aspiring book cover illustrators has been a very humbling and rewarding experience. We all start at step one. Each step we take moves us further to our goals. I hope my journey inspires people to believe in their dreams and to carry on walking. You just never know how beautiful the journey may become.
A massive shout to Blk + Brwn Book Designers, Inc. | Your Favorite Book Creatives for all incredible ongoing work they do for aspiring book cover illustrators and designers. Give them a follow to keep up to date with everything they do ❤️❤️

The Art of Killing Gods by Alvin Svitzer. A cover I created after reading the manuscript and searching for the visual doorway into the story.
The camera became my lens into Olympus.
I wanted the reader to see the contrast between the beautiful, powerful world of the gods and the destruction unfolding behind it. The broken gates, burning mountain and the sense that something much bigger was beginning to unravel.
For me, book cover illustration isn’t about simply making something that looks good.
It starts with listening.
I read. I think. I sketch. I experiment. I question. And eventually I try to find that one visual idea that can carry the emotional weight of the story.
Then comes the moment when the artwork leaves my screen and becomes a real book.
And honestly… that’s pretty magical. ❤️
Thank you Alvin for trusting me with your story.
Have you ever wondered what happens behind the cover of a book?

Yesterday I met Katy from Creative Boom · Art & Design 💥
We laughed, talked about creativity, books and the future of the creative and other industries, and I came away reminded of something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.
There are so many conversations right now about AI and what it means for creative work. While technology will undoubtedly continue to evolve, I don’t believe it can replace the things that make us human.
A genuine conversation.
A shared laugh, which made my belly and jaw ache
Feeling listened to.
Feeling understood.
Those moments build trust, friendships and opportunities in a way no algorithm can.
As a (dentist and) illustrator, I spend a lot of time listening and connecting with people. It’s at the heart of how I work with authors and publishers, and it’s also why I love meeting people within the creative community.
Because behind every book, every illustration and every opportunity is a person.
And I think that’s something worth celebrating.
Thank you, Katy Cowan 🫶 You are genuinely awesome! It was such a pleasure meeting you, and I’m really looking forward to what comes next. 🙂
