Roseground Tatting & Lacemaking Supplies Tatting is a form of lacemaking which probably originated, in its present form, in the early 19th century.
Bobbin lacemaking originated in the 16th century in continental Europe and has developed throughout the world, in various forms and in various centres, since then. In England it developed as a cottage industry, again in various distinctive regional forms in several areas, notably the south-east midlands - Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire - and in Devon. This cottage industry had its heyday in the 19th century before being largely overtaken by machine-made lace from the Nottingham area. The 1960s the craft saw a revival in interest in lacemaking among hobby lacemakers which spread throughout the world, The craft continues to flourish today, with 'lace days' and 'lace fairs' held regularly in most parts of the United Kingdom and other places thoughout the world. It is traditionally carried out using a shuttle to form the distinctive forms often seen on doily and handkerchief edgings - but nowadays developed to produce, in addition, far more adventurous and advanced pieces. More recently, needle tatting has developed and remains a popular alternative to the shuttle.

Is it too early to mention Christmas? I don't think so, we all know that lace isn't created in 5 minutes! With that in mind - Belle snowflake angel (it has become a tradition to create a new angel every year) will be on the way to Roseground tomorrow. Pam also stocks the snowflake frames.

A fabulous new book alert! "New Lace From Old" by Unagh McCullough MBE
This is Unagh's second publication, her first being the extremely popular "101 Variations in Torchon Lace"
To celebrate the 35th Anniversary of ARDS Bobbin Lace Enthusiasts, Unagh has taken vintage/heritage pieces of lace (some mere scraps) and redrafted and modernised the design into new patterns and worked examples for today's lacemakers.
30 mainly Torchon designs - edgings, bookmarks, mats and more - a superb array of designs to keep you busy!
Unagh was awarded an MBE in the King's 2026 birthday honours for services to the art of lacemaking and needlecraft. Huge congratulations to Unagh on this well deserved recognition

On the train heading up to Nottingham after a few days at Claire Bonito’s Milanese course - part of the Missenden Crestive Arts Summer School.
3 fabulous days of superb tuition, great company - and yummy food! I loved every minute and cannot wait to return ❤️
Now to catch up with orders - Martin has been doing the prep work whilst I’ve been away so hopefully we will be up to date quickly🤞

New thread alert! There's always something new at Roseground!
Earlier this year we were approached by Frank's Baumwolle in Germany asking if we would consider stocking their lacemaking thread. It was not a thread I knew too much about but after receiving some sample thread and working some lace with it (thanks Mrs Roseground the 1st), we decided that it would be a great addition to our fabulous range of threads.
A weekend of sport on the television has given me the opportunity to work on the colour charts and add the thread to the website. Even when watching TV I have to be working on something!!
