When Lizzy came to live in a rural part of Nottinghamshire, she found herself new to the area – with no close friends nearby and with limited transport – and unsure of what to do.

But that has all changed now, thanks to the help and support of Futures careers adviser Paul Beilby.

Over the next seven months, Paul introduced her a theatrical group in the next village, supported her onto the King's Trust TEAM programme and worked closely with her EHC Practitioner to secure a fully-funded full-time course at Aspire & Achieve in Mansfield – at a college she already knew from the TEAM programme.

"I have gone from not doing anything and having no social life to now accessing relevant courses that meet my needs and having new friends," Lizzy said. "I would not be where I am now without Paul's support."

Well done Lizzy – and brilliant work Paul!

For councillor Leslie Ayoola, representing Mapperley Ward, referring people to Futures is part of the daily job.

Since he was elected in 2015, he has been pointing people – both his own residents and others across the city – towards us to see if we can help them.

This includes people who are out of work, people who want to change careers or just people who just need to know where to start. He said: "Futures is an incredibly important partner. It's paramount."

Thank you Cllr Ayoola - and we will continue to be there for all those people who are referred to us πŸ’š

These photos show what a special moment the Futures team had last week!

We came together to celebrate more than a decade of delivering the National Careers Service across the East Midlands and East of England – and to hear about some of the people whose lives have changed because of it.

Awards were handed out to colleagues who have given everything to this work, while the whole event brought together careers advisers, delivery managers and support staff who have made a genuine difference to thousands of people across our region in one room.

We really couldn't be prouder of what this team has built πŸ’š

In the past year alone, Futures helped more than 500 young people across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire find their next steps.

That's over 500 conversations, 500 plans and 500 moments where someone helped each individual work out what their future looked like, whether that was a college place, a job, an apprenticeship or simply a clear direction to move in.

That work happens in schools, in community centres and in the places where young people actually are. We have been making it happen in this city and county for more than 30 years. And it is still happening now.

Then. Now. Always πŸ’š

After all, we've been in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire and the rest of the region, doing this work, for over three decades.

We want to share what that looks like for you, so keep following our posts in the coming weeks to find out more about how we work πŸ’š

For a lot of young people, they have heard about different careers but never had chance to see what they look like in practice.

Instead, what they see is a job title on a list or a qualification requirement on a website - but often something that feels like it might be for someone else and not them.

What changes their opinion is a room like the one pictured – where they meet real professionals and get a chance to ask honest questions about what the work actually involves day to day.

Helping young people find their next steps shouldn't involve just presentations about careers - they need to see it for themselves.

Connecting them to moments like this is a big part of what Futures does – working alongside schools, employers and partner organisations to make sure the possibilities are visible before they start to feel out of reach.

It has been that kind of work, in this region, for more than 30 years πŸ’™

It's been quite a summer so far already πŸ’š

Over the past few months, our team has been busy – co-ordinating employer work experience visits with organisations like Nottingham CityCare Partnership, Nottingham City Council Housing Services and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue, running free training courses and supporting young people and adults across the East Midlands to take their next steps.

As summer starts to wind down and September approaches, we just wanted to say: if you or someone you know is still figuring out what comes next, we're here - and we've got lots more planned for the new academic year.
