Never underestimate how much the right lighting can change a room 👌⚡

A few recent swaps and upgrades across different jobs. Simple changes, but they can completely change the feel of a space.

Definitely one of the easiest ways to freshen a room up.

Another couple jobs wrapped up ⚡️

Work included:

* Consumer unit upgrade to a new Fusebox RCBO board with surge protection
* Garden lighting installation
* Switch relocation and associated wiring alterations
* Testing and labelling throughout

The old Wylex setup was ready for retirement, so the property now has a much more modern and better-protected installation.

Quick job over at Nottingham Jagtech 🐆

Fitted an additional outdoor socket for the lads so they’ve got an easier power point for cleaning and valeting the cars outside.

A tidy, practical addition that’ll get plenty of use day to day.

Always good doing work for another local business 🤝

Few jobs from the last week ⚡️

Been a busy one recently with a good mix of work — consumer unit upgrades, kitchen electrics, lighting, fault finding , last minute call outs and smaller jobs in between.

Really enjoying the variety of work coming through at the minute and getting to meet plenty of new customers along the way.

As always, appreciate everyone who recommends me or passes my details on. It genuinely goes a long way for a local business 👍

First day for the new apprentice ⚡️

Turned up without any tools, ignored every instruction and fell asleep on the job.

Promising. 🐈‍⬛😂

A look back at another busy week for Phase Point Electrical ⚡

A good mixture of work this week, including upgrading the lighting and installing new sockets across old farm buildings, fitting a new ceiling fan and replacing a damaged kitchen hob at short notice.

The farm buildings were a particularly satisfying job, taking some very dark working areas and making them properly usable again.

Plenty of variety, plenty of miles and some good results throughout the week.

⚡ “It’s all brand new…” until you actually open it up.

This kitchen rip-out is turning into a perfect example of why a “new install” on paper doesn’t always mean a good install in reality.

The customer had been sold this as a brand-new electrical installation with a new fuseboard.

Once we started opening the kitchen up, the hidden side of the job told a very different story.

🔎 What I found:

• Around 12 junction boxes
• A socket circuit that hadn’t been properly carried on as a ring, but instead had been spurred off in multiple directions through junction boxes
• Excess cable everywhere hidden above the ceiling and behind the kitchen
• What looks like scrap cable / random cut-offs used to piece things together
• Poorly terminated cables
• Spotlights with insulation trapped in the terminals instead of clean copper terminations
• Incorrect polarity on lighting wiring
• “Brand-new” light fittings opened up to reveal connector block and tape inside
• Damaged cable insulation / sheath
• And to top it off… cables run outside recognised wiring zones

For anyone not in the trade, wiring zones are the recognised safe areas where cables should be run within walls — usually vertically or horizontally from accessories.

That matters because if cables are run randomly outside those zones, someone drilling, screwing or cutting into that wall in future has far less chance of knowing where they are. That’s when dangerous damage can happen.

The customers had also been complaining about LED lamps flickering and failing over short periods of time.

Once you start finding poor terminations, wrong polarity and messy hidden connections, it becomes pretty obvious why.

Then there’s the consumer unit.

Although it may have looked “new” at the time, it was installed back in 2004 and only has one RCD, leaving the cooker and part of the kitchen side without RCD protection.

That might not mean much to the average homeowner, but it’s another example of why a tidy-looking board front doesn’t automatically mean the installation behind it is up to a good standard.

⚠️ Why this matters

Electrical work isn’t just about making things switch on.

Every unnecessary joint is another point of failure.
Every poor termination is a potential heat issue.
Every damaged cable is a risk.
Every cable outside a recognised zone is poor practice.
And every hidden shortcut becomes the next person’s problem later on.

The wild part?

The pile of removed cable and accessories came from taking out only around 2–3 sockets and 4–5 spotlights in the areas we were dealing with.

That gives you an idea of just how much unnecessary wiring had been left buried in this kitchen.

This is exactly why inspection, testing and proper installation standards matter.

A socket can work.
A light can come on.
A fuseboard can look neat.

That does not automatically mean the installation behind it is safe, well planned or correctly carried out.

⚡ A new fuseboard is only as good as the wiring connected to it.

More photos from this one to follow.
