On September 22, 1980, HMS Ark Royal (R09) was seen being towed out of Devonport, England, en route to Cairnryan, Scotland, for scrapping. This departure marked the final leg of the Audacious-class aircraft carrier's long journey following its official decommissioning in February 1979.
HMS Ark Royal was one of the Royal Navy's last large aircraft carriers to operate fixed-wing aircraft using a catapult and arrestor wire system. After leaving Devonport, the ship arrived in Cairnryan on September 28, 1980, and was subsequently dismantled in stages through 1983.⚓
