DAGBON to ENSKIN NEW REGENT TODAY AS THOUSANDS CONVERGE IN YENDI

Dagbon is set to enskin Kampakuya Naa Abukari Yakubu, the first surviving son of the late Ya-Na Abukari II, as the Regent of Dagbon today, Friday, July 31, 2026.

The ceremony, scheduled to take place at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi, forms part of the traditional processes following the passing of the late overlord and will pave the way for the performance of his final funeral rites and the eventual selection and enskinment of a substantive Ya-Na.

Thousands of sons and daughters of Dagbon have already converged on Yendi for the historic ceremony. Traditional rituals and other customary activities have been performed ahead of the main enskinment later today.

The ceremony is expected to attract traditional leaders from sister kingdoms, members of the diplomatic corps, political figures, government officials, Members of Parliament, heads of security agencies, development partners and other distinguished guests.

Former Vice President of Ghana, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is also expected to attend, alongside several other dignitaries.

According to the official programme, the customary enskinment of the Regent is scheduled for 1:30pm, followed by his ceremonial es**rt to the durbar grounds.

The programme will include royal citations, traditional salutations and homage, solidarity messages from sister kingdoms, remarks by the Regent and other dignitaries, as well as an address by President John Dramani Mahama.

Some participants who spoke to NorthWeb News editor, Nam Nurudeen ahead of the ceremony expressed excitement about the historic occasion, describing the enskinment as an important traditional process that will help ensure continuity and stability in Dagbon. They also called on residents, visitors and all stakeholders to maintain peace and respect the customs and traditions governing the ceremony.

The event is expected to conclude with a brief cultural performance and closing prayer before the departure of dignitaries and a cultural display.

Under Dagbon customs and traditions, following the death of a Ya-Na, the first surviving son may be enskinned as Kampakuya Naa, or Regent, to temporarily oversee the affairs of the kingdom until the final funeral rites of his father are performed and a new substantive Ya-Na is selected and enskinned.

The Regent assumes significant traditional responsibilities during the transitional period. He exercises delegated authority to oversee the affairs of the kingdom, including the enskinment of chiefs to vacant traditional areas and other decisions on behalf of Dagbon, in consultation with the Kuga Naa and other relevant traditional authorities.

The Regent is also accorded the courtesies and traditional recognition associated with the office of a Ya-Na during the period of his regency.

The enskinment of Kampakuya Naa Abukari Yakubu therefore marks a significant stage in Dagbon’s traditional succession process following the death of Ya-Na Abukari II, as the kingdom prepares for the late king’s final funeral rites and the eventual selection of a substantive successor.

“Where Are the Well-Paying Jobs You Promised Ghanaians?” — Bosome Freho MP Challenges Government

The Member of Parliament for Bosome Freho, Nana Kwame Osafo Adjei Ayeh, has challenged the government to account for its promise to create well-paying and sustainable jobs for Ghanaians, particularly the youth.

Contributing to the debate on the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Statement on the floor of Parliament, the MP argued that young Ghanaians should not expect immediate employment opportunities from the budget, describing some of the government’s touted job-creation interventions as lacking the immediate funding needed for implementation.

He specifically questioned the government’s promise to create sustainable jobs through the Oil Palm project, arguing that the proposed funding timeline makes it unlikely for the initiative to deliver the promised jobs within the year.

The Bosome Freho MP said young people who were expecting the mid-year budget to provide relief through employment opportunities could end up disappointed.

Quoting the government’s commitment to “implement revolutionary and transformational policies to create sustainable, decent, well-paying jobs,” he posed a direct question to the government:

The lawmaker also referenced the government’s proposed 24-hour economy and its “one job, three shifts, three workers” model, saying these are the employment opportunities Ghanaians are waiting to see translated into reality.

He therefore urged the government to move beyond promises and demonstrate how and when the proposed interventions would create tangible, well-paying jobs for the Ghanaian youth.
