🎓 Week Two of the GFIA Foundation Programme

Today, our first cohort continues the GFIA Foundation Programme with Financial Markets and Principles of Investing, led by Tim Rickson and Marcin Wójcik
This practical and interactive session takes participants through the fundamentals of investing — exploring why we invest, risk and return, and the characteristics of bonds, equities, alternatives and cryptocurrencies.

Participants will also look at how different asset classes work together within a portfolio, covering diversification, strategic asset allocation and different investor risk profiles, before putting their learning into practice with a group exercise to build an investment strategy for a hypothetical client.

The session also introduces the principles of performance measurement, as well as the evolution of digital money, blockchain and the fundamental differences between Bitcoin, Ethereum and stablecoins.

With a mix of theory, real-world examples, discussion and practical exercises, the Foundation Programme is all about giving participants a solid and applicable understanding of the investment and funds industry.

Meet James Lasry CIFD TEP Lasry CIFD, Deputy Chairman of GFIA.
James is a Partner at Hassans and Head of the Financial Services Department, with extensive experience in investment funds and financial services.

A former Chairman of GFIA, James continues to play an important role in supporting the Association and Gibraltar’s funds sector.

🎓 The GFIA Foundation Programme is officially underway!

This morning, we welcomed our first cohort of students as they began the GFIA Foundation Programme — a four-week introduction to the fundamentals and essentials of the funds industry with key industry experts delivering each session.

Over the coming weeks, participants will explore:
🔹 Gibraltar’s financial services industry and its key stakeholders
🔹 Financial markets and the principles of investing
🔹 The role of investment funds and fund administration
🔹 Fund structures and the key participants involved
🔹 Crypto, DLT and blockchain fundamentals
🔹 Gibraltar’s regulatory framework and the Experienced Investor Fund (EIF)

The programme has been designed to provide a practical understanding of how the different parts of Gibraltar’s funds industry work together.

➡️SURDEA Initio LP
We are delighted to welcome SURDEA Initio LP as a new member of GFIA.
Launched in June 2026, SURDEA Initio is an EIF focused on investment opportunities in emerging economies, with an underlying portfolio spanning equity interests in financial institutions, proprietary finance vehicles and real estate assets.
The fund has developed a distinctive investment strategy built around multiple return drivers, combining financial leverage with the long-term economic growth of selected emerging markets. A key feature is its vertical integration, bringing together real estate development and bespoke financing structures to create operational and financial synergies across its investments.
SURDEA focuses on countries with strong long-term growth prospects and applies stringent criteria around regulatory compliance, sovereign credit ratings and political stability. Around 30–40% of the portfolio is expected to be invested in real estate projects in established markets, including Gibraltar.
We are delighted to have SURDEA Initio as part of the GFIA community and look forward to following their growth and development.

Today marks a defining moment in Gibraltar's modern history.

The agreement between the UK and the EU on Gibraltar represents far more than a political milestone. It provides a framework for greater certainty, stronger connectivity and renewed confidence in Gibraltar's future as an international financial centre.

For the financial services and investment industry, certainty matters. Businesses, investors and international clients value stability, clarity and the ability to plan for the long term. The removal of routine land border checks, together with arrangements that facilitate the movement of people and goods, has the potential to strengthen Gibraltar's position as a competitive and accessible jurisdiction for global business.

As the representative body for Gibraltar's funds and investment sector, GFIA welcomes developments that enhance Gibraltar's attractiveness while preserving the qualities that have made the jurisdiction internationally respected: a robust regulatory framework, political stability, a highly skilled professional community and a long-standing reputation for innovation and high standards.

This agreement also recognises the importance of the thousands of cross-frontier workers whose contribution is vital to Gibraltar's economy and financial services industry. Greater certainty for businesses and the workforce alike creates a stronger foundation for future growth.

Whilst there is still work ahead as the agreement is implemented, today marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter. We look forward to continuing to promote Gibraltar as a forward-looking international finance centre and to supporting the opportunities this new era may bring for the funds and investment sector.

GFIA Gala Dinner 2026 - Sponsored by Capurro

On Thursday 4th June, members of Gibraltar's funds and investment community gathered in the beautiful surroundings of the Alameda Gardens for the annual GFIA Gala Dinner.

This year's theme, Alice Through the Looking Glass, reflected the ever-evolving nature of the financial services industry, where new opportunities, innovation and changing perspectives continue to shape the future.
Guests were welcomed by GFIA Chairman Jonathan Garcia, who opened the evening by reflecting on the achievements of the sector and the importance of collaboration across Gibraltar's financial services community. The event was also honoured by the attendance of Minister Nigel Feetham KC MP, who spoke about the strength and future of Gibraltar's finance centre.

The Alameda Gardens provided a stunning backdrop for the evening, transformed into a magical wonderland inspired by Lewis Carroll's classic tale. As the sun set, guests enjoyed an atmosphere that was both elegant and imaginative.

The evening's chosen charity was Prostate Cancer Gibraltar. Attendees heard from Paul Buxton, who shared his personal experience of diagnosis, surgery and recovery, delivering a powerful message about awareness and early detection.

Guests were also delighted by the attendance of internationally acclaimed Gibraltarian artist Christian Hook, who generously donated a print for the charity auction. Entertainment throughout the evening included graceful dancing roses and the beautiful sounds of the cello, adding to the enchanting atmosphere.

Exceptional food was provided by Rendezvous with event coordination managed by The Dream Team VA, working closely with suppliers, entertainers, sponsors and the GFIA committee to ensure a seamless experience for guests.

Events of this scale rely on the support of valued sponsors, and special thanks must go to Capurro Group, particularly John Capurro and his team, for their continued support of GFIA and the Gala Dinner.

The GFIA Gala Dinner remains one of the highlights of Gibraltar's financial services calendar, bringing together industry professionals, government representatives and supporters while raising awareness and funds for important local causes.
