💜 DAY 29 | KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Access to Justice Should Be Fair and Responsive

Article 12 of the AU Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls calls on member states to enact and enforce laws that ensure a victim-centred approach, providing effective access to justice and security for victims.

This includes implementing fair, non-discriminatory procedures and rules of evidence, and establishing effective referral processes and procedural protections.

Every woman and girl facing violence deserves a justice system that responds with fairness, dignity, protection, and respect.

Justice must be accessible, and protection must be effective.

Our culture can protect, empower, and promote dignity.

Article 10 of the AU Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls calls on States Parties to adopt measures, evidence-based programs, and strategies that highlight positive aspects of African culture and norms which do not contribute to the vulnerability of women and girls to violence, including femicide.

Culture and tradition should never be used to harm or silence women and girls. Instead, we must promote the values within our communities that encourage respect, dignity, equality, peace, and protection.

Let us celebrate the African values that safeguard women and girls while challenging those that expose them to violence.
