โš ๏ธ Nothing happened. This time.

Thatโ€™s exactly why near misses matter.

A dropped object that missed someone.
A slip without a fall.
A vehicle that came too close.
An unsafe condition spotted before someone was hurt.

Near misses are early warnings โ€” and reporting them gives you the opportunity to act before they become accidents.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Report it
๐Ÿ‘‰ Investigate it
๐Ÿ‘‰ Fix the issue
๐Ÿ‘‰ Share the learning
๐Ÿ‘‰ Prevent it happening again

At SEQ Consultancy, we can help you put effective near-miss reporting procedures in place, investigate incidents and build a stronger safety culture across your organisation.

Donโ€™t wait for a near miss to become an accident.

๐Ÿšฉ 6 things you DONโ€™T want an auditor to findโ€ฆ

These are some of the most common non-conformances that can catch businesses out:

โŒ Out-of-date policies and procedures
โŒ Risk assessments that no longer reflect the work
โŒ Missing or incomplete training records
โŒ Corrective actions that were never closed out
โŒ Poor document control
โŒ No clear evidence that required checks were completed

Individually, they might seem small. But during an audit, small gaps can quickly add up.

The best time to find a non-conformance? Before your auditor does.

SEQ Consultancy can carry out internal audits and compliance reviews to identify gaps, help close out actions and get your systems audit-ready.

๐Ÿ“‹ Audit coming up? Letโ€™s make sure youโ€™re ready for it.

๐Ÿฅพ PPE SPOTLIGHT: SAFETY FOOTWEAR

Safety boots on? Great.
But are they the right safety boots for the job?

Choosing safety footwear isnโ€™t simply about ticking the PPE box. The correct footwear should be selected based on the hazards and tasks involved.

Depending on the workplace, you may need protection against:

๐Ÿฅพ Impact or crushing
๐Ÿ”ฉ Punctures from sharp objects
๐Ÿ’ง Water and wet conditions
โšก Electrical hazards
๐Ÿงช Chemicals
๐Ÿฆถ Slips and uneven surfaces

The key takeaway? PPE should match the risk and it's your last line of defence.

Your risk assessment should identify the hazards first โ€” and the appropriate PPE should follow.

At SEQ Consultancy, we help businesses assess workplace risks, review PPE requirements and put practical safety controls in place.

๐Ÿ“ฉ Need support reviewing PPE requirements in your workplace? Get in touch.

PSDP or PSCS? Know the difference. ๐Ÿ—๏ธ

Itโ€™s actually pretty simple:

๐Ÿ“ PSDP = Design Stage
Coordinates health & safety throughout the design process โ€” identifying and reducing risks before construction begins.

๐Ÿ‘ท PSCS = Construction Stage
Coordinates health & safety once work gets underway โ€” managing safety throughout the construction phase.

Think of it this way:
๐Ÿ‘‰ PSDP = Plan it safely
๐Ÿ‘‰ PSCS = Build it safely

At SEQ Consultancy, we can provide PSDP and PSCS services and help ensure your project meets its health & safety responsibilities from design through to completion.

New Course at SEQ Training Academy โญ

Weโ€™re hearing more and more from our clients โ€” particularly those with customer-facing teams โ€” about staff having to deal with challenging, aggressive and, in some cases, potentially violent behaviour at work.

Thatโ€™s why weโ€™re now offering our Prevention and Management of Aggression and Violence at Work (PMAV) course.

This practical 1-day course is designed to give employees the knowledge and skills to recognise, prevent and respond appropriately to aggression and violence in the workplace. Training includes:

โœ” Recognising early warning signs and escalation
โœ” Effective communication and conflict resolution
โœ” Verbal de-escalation strategies
โœ” Personal safety and safe withdrawal techniques
โœ” Physical breakaway techniques
โœ” Post-incident actions and reporting

Importantly, the course can be adapted to the specific risks, working environment and needs of your organisation, making it particularly relevant for teams regularly interacting with customers or members of the public.

Participants receive an accredited certificate valid for 3 years, with a maximum of 12 participants per course.

If aggression or challenging behaviour is becoming a concern for your team, talk to us about putting the right training and supports in place.

โ˜€๏ธ Hot day on site? Hydration is a safety issue.

When temperatures rise, heat stress and dehydration can quickly impact concentration, reaction times and decision-making โ€” all critical when working around machinery, vehicles, at height or carrying out physical work.

๐Ÿ’ง Keep water readily available
โฑ๏ธ Encourage regular hydration and breaks
๐ŸŒณ Provide shade or cooler rest areas
โ˜€๏ธ Plan heavier work around peak heat where possible
โš ๏ธ Make sure teams know the signs of heat stress

Donโ€™t wait until someone feels unwell.

At SEQ Consultancy, we help businesses identify risks, review controls and keep their people safe and compliant on site.

๐Ÿ“ฉ Get in touch with our team if you need support with your workplace health & safety.

Here's a great example of good site management.

Pedestrian walkways should always be kept clear and protected. When lifting materials with a teleporter or other plant, loads should never travel over an open pedestrian walkway.

Instead, the walkway should be temporarily closed, the lift completed safely, and only then reopened to pedestrians.

Simple controls like these help separate people from moving plant, reduce the risk of serious incidents, and keep everyone on site safe.

๐Ÿšง Every Safe Site Starts with a Good Induction

A site induction is often the very first step before work beginsโ€”and one of the most important.

It's not just about signing your name. A proper induction ensures everyone understands:
โœ”๏ธ Site rules and procedures
โœ”๏ธ Emergency arrangements and welfare facilities
โœ”๏ธ Key hazards and restricted areas
โœ”๏ธ Required PPE and safe systems of work
โœ”๏ธ Who to report to if something changes

For the main contractor, inductions are equally important. They help maintain an accurate record of who is on site at all times, improving communication, coordination and emergency response if needed.

A few minutes spent on a thorough induction can prevent misunderstandings, reduce risk and help everyone go home safely at the end of the day.
