Based in Ontario, Canada, Shaun is an internationally recognised and award-winning photographer, storyteller and speaker, and we’re very excited to have him joining us via Zoom from Canada.

His work covers an impressive range of genres, including travel, landscape and wildlife photography, lifestyle portraits, pet photography and aerial photography. His photography has been featured by Canadian Geographic, Canon Canada, Sigma Canada, and other notable organisations

Shaun’s work is exceptional, and this promises to be a fascinating and inspiring evening for anyone who enjoys photography. His images, creativity and storytelling make this a talk that is really worth coming along to.

What Judges Look For in Competitions!

A big thank you to everyone who submitted images for our Camera Club evening, “What Judges Look For in Competitions.”

It was fantastic to see such a wide variety of images and, more importantly, to have members willing to put their work forward for discussion and feedback.

A special thank you to our more experienced members who generously shared their knowledge and gave constructive feedback on each image — discussing what worked well and, just as importantly, what could be improved to help strengthen an image for competition.

The aim of the evening was not simply to say whether an image was good or bad, but to look at composition, lighting, impact, technique and storytelling, and to understand how small changes can sometimes make a big difference.

Hopefully everyone came away with a few new ideas to try with their own photography — and perhaps a different way of looking at their images before entering them into a competition.

Thank you again to everyone who took part and contributed to a really enjoyable and informative evening.

Join us for an informal and informative evening where we'll explore some of the key elements judges commonly consider when assessing competition images, including impact, storytelling, technical quality, composition, and common pitfalls.

As part of the evening, we will give a short presentation and then invite members to submit images for positive and constructive feedback. Whether you're considering entering an image in a competition or simply looking for suggestions on how to improve a photograph, this is a great opportunity to learn and develop your skills in a supportive environment.

Through Her
Lens
This week, we're delighted to feature Helen Quirke in our Through Her Lens series, celebrating the talented women of Limerick Camera Club.

A member of the club since 2007, Helen has explored many genres of photography over the years, from landscapes and portraits to still life. More recently, she has developed a passion for boxing photography, combining technical skill with a personal connection to the sport.

Her chosen image captures a powerful moment in the ring, showcasing the excitement, intensity, and split-second timing that make sports photography so rewarding. Through her lens, Helen brings us into a world that is both challenging to photograph and full of energy and emotion.

As you may have seen from last year's competitions I have entered some boxing images. It's not a sport for everyone but I really love it - it's a connection to my late Dad who boxed as a young man and my daughter Rowena who loved her boxing training.

I follow some Limerick boxers and shoot other bouts as well when at their events. I use a Canon R6 and was using a 24-105 lens but recently purchased a 24-70 lens and this is simply amazing.
This image is of Kian Hedderman (black shorts green trim). Kian is an amazing young talent and is a joy to watch but frustrating to photograph as he tends to knock out his opponents in the second round so I have to really concentrate. However, this image is one of my favourites from last year and Seamus Costelloe kindly gave me a 20 - which is rare for me.

I joined Limerick Camera Club in 2007 and was warmly welcomed by the late Dom Moloney. My first love is (perhaps now was) landscape photography. I've been to some amazing places and hopefully I will again. I have done some portraits work which I do enjoy. I especially liked the Still Life evening last September with Michelle and Terry and I'd like to try more. Still Life is so delicate and peaceful compared to ringside at boxing where I've had blood and spray hit me, but I don't care I just love the excitement and thrill, and I've met some wonderful people in the boxing community including past Irish Olympians.

Paul will introduce RapidRAW, a free photo editing software, and show how it can be used in your workflow.

Smartphone Photography & Editing
Des will demonstrate how to take better photos with an Android phone and how to edit them using the free Google Photos app.

Photographing Family Events
Noreen will share the basics of photographing family gatherings and special occasions, with practical tips to help you capture memorable moments.

Competition Entry Portal Demonstration
Arthur will demonstrate how to upload images to the club's competition portal and explain the submission process. This is a great opportunity to learn how to enter your images ahead of our first competition of the season on 7 October.

Whether you're new to photography or looking to pick up a few new skills, there's something for everyone.

Through Her Lens – Noreen Finn

This week, we're delighted to feature Noreen Finn in our Through Her Lens series, celebrating the talented women of Limerick Camera Club.

A member of the club since 2015 and our current Treasurer, Noreen has explored a variety of photographic genres throughout her photography journey, from weddings and events to portraiture and landscapes. Her chosen image, captured on Lough Derg as the sun set over Holy Island, beautifully reflects her appreciation of light, atmosphere, and the natural world.

Noreen's story highlights an important aspect of photography: it's not the camera that creates the image, but the photographer's ability to see a moment worth capturing. Through her own experiences, she shares how photography has evolved for her and how the club continues to support photographers at every stage of their journey.

I joined Limerick Camera Club in 2015 and am the current Treasurer for the club. At the beginning of my photography journey, I had the opportunity to work as a second shooter with a wedding photographer. This was amazing training as there are rarely opportunities to capture a moment a second time at a wedding. The roll then expanded to include events photography both in studio and at external venues. I enjoyed the challenge of having to quickly assess a number of variables such as lighting, environment, client requirements and subject personalities so that I could produce professional images which the client was happy with.

Since Covid I have primarily focused on Landscape photography whilst still doing some portraiture. Landscape photography has opened up a whole new set of challenges and opportunities whilst applying the basic concepts in a different manner. An unexpected positive consequence was that it has increased my appreciation of nature and wildlife. A case in point is this image. I took it this July on Lough Derg as the sun was setting over Holy Island. The lake was calm with the only ripples being created by the boat.

This photograph was taken with an iPhone and then processed in Lightroom. I deliberately included this as my sample image as sometimes people can feel that they need to invest in expensive equipment if they join a camera club. In my opinion there are two phases in photography. Firstly, there is seeing the shot which includes learning about what generates a response/emotion in you or your client. In this image, I was inspired to take the picture by the calm on the lake which created beautiful reflections and the way the sun dipped behind the island whilst casting a glow on the scene. Secondly, there are the technical skills which ensure that whatever camera you use can capture the scene as you see it. More advanced cameras can make the process easier. However, those cameras cannot create an image in the first place. That is why joining a camera club will expose you to a number of different types of photography via monthly competitions and guest speakers.

Limerick Camera Club is a welcoming environment where support is provided for wherever you are on your photography journey.
