A journey through Shima, once known as “Saki-gun,” tracing the town of Nakiri, spread across the hills of Daiosaki at the southern tip of the peninsula.

In the early Showa period, this landscape captivated many writers and painters, who found inspiration here for their work. The vivid colors that unfold across this small peninsula, together with its nostalgic streets and scenery, continue to draw people in today.

Photographer Olivier Kervern, who had long been influenced by and curious about this town, visited Nakiri to capture its sense of nostalgia and the quiet warmth of the place.

We hope you enjoy this slightly different expression of the 45R world, made possible through a wonderful series of encounters and connections.

Ahead of 45R’s 50th anniversary in 2027, we opened our new Ginza Flagship Store on September 8, 2026—a culmination of the journey we have taken so far.

It stands on Nishi-Ginza Gobangai Street, a corner of Ginza that still retains the atmosphere of long-established shops amid the brilliance of the city. Set within an entire four-story building, each floor has been given its own distinct world. Carpenters joined the timber, plasterers finished the walls, and throughout the building we brought together the materials and craftsmanship of traditional Japanese architecture.

Each floor reveals a different side of 45R. On the first floor, Kuri no Ma 栗の間 brings together centuries-old reclaimed chestnut, teak, stone, and the materials that have long shaped our storemaking. The second floor, Kyokumen no Ma 曲面の間, is a softer, more organic space where rounded walls, furniture, and racks create a landscape of curves for the season’s collection. On the third floor, Ai no Ma 藍の間 is devoted to Japanese indigo, with hinoki, ichimatsu flooring, and richly textured plasterwork creating a clear, quietly tense atmosphere for the work of indigo craftspeople from across Japan. At the top, Chabatei 茶馬亭 is a gallery and tea room inspired by sukiya architecture and the culture of tea, bringing together ceramics, lacquerware, woodcraft, and other forms of everyday craft in a world set apart from the city outside.
