Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has announced plans to install a CT Scan machine at Webuye Hospital as the county mourns sixteen people who lost their lives in a tragic road accident earlier this month.

Speaking during a memorial service held in honour of the victims of the March 9 accident, Lusaka said the county government was taking steps to strengthen emergency medical response in the region to better handle critical cases.

He noted that the installation of the CT Scan machine will significantly enhance diagnostic services at Webuye Hospital and enable residents to access specialized medical care closer to home.

โ€œThis investment will greatly enhance our diagnostic capacity and emergency response. Our people deserve timely and quality medical care when emergencies occur,โ€ Lusaka said.

The governor described the accident as a painful tragedy that had shaken the entire county, noting that the loss of sixteen lives had left families and the wider Bungoma community in deep mourning.

โ€œWhen sixteen lives are lost in such a sudden and heartbreaking manner, it is not just the affected families who grieve โ€” the entire county mourns. Bungoma stands with the bereaved families during this difficult time,โ€ he said.

Lusaka also commended religious leaders for organizing the memorial service and for providing spiritual support to the affected families. He said the prayers and guidance offered by the clergy had helped bring comfort and hope to the grieving community.

At the same time, the governor called on motorists and other road users to exercise caution and responsibility on the roads to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

โ€œToo many families continue to lose their loved ones on our roads. Every life lost is one too many. We must all work together to ensure our roads are safe for everyone,โ€ Lusaka said.

Beyond mourning the victims, Lusaka said the county government remains committed to strengthening healthcare services and improving emergency preparedness, noting that investments in medical equipment and health infrastructure are key to saving lives.

Webuye County Hospital has received a major boost to its diagnostic capacity following the delivery of an Artificial Intelligenceโ€“enabled X-ray machine and assorted medical equipment worth Sh20.9 million from USAID Dumisha Afya partners.

The flagship AI X-ray machine, valued at Sh14.3 million, is expected to significantly enhance early diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB), chest infections and limb-related conditions, strengthening health service delivery across 51 health facilities in Bungoma County.

Receiving the equipment, Governor Kenneth Lusaka lauded USAID Dumisha Afya for its continued partnership, noting that the investment aligns with the countyโ€™s commitment to universal health coverage.

โ€œThis technology will enhance early disease detection, particularly TB, which remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the county. Early diagnosis means timely treatment and lives saved,โ€ said Governor Lusaka.

He reiterated that health remains a top priority of his administration, adding that the county will continue leveraging partnerships to strengthen health systems through modern technology. The governor also assured Community Health Promoters (CHPs) of continued support to enable effective service delivery at the grassroots.

USAID Dumisha Afya Chief of Party, Dr.Everline Ashiono, said the AI-enabled equipment will improve diagnostic accuracy and speed, leading to reduced TB-related deaths and hospital admissions.
โ€œThese machines will support prompt diagnosis and treatment, ultimately lowering mortality rates and easing the burden on health facilities,โ€ she said.

Beyond the X-ray equipment, USAID Dumisha Afya is also supporting the county with cervical cancer screening supplies, ICT equipment and computers to enhance health digitization, data quality and system integrity. The programme is being implemented under the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospitalโ€“AMPATH partnership.

The donated equipment will be distributed across 51 health facilities countywide to improve access to quality diagnostic services.
