The Guetemala Syphilis Study: Crime Against Humanity
Doctors and scientists are respected by all of us, even today. Yes, it should be because of their great mission and their new discoveries that many lives are being saved even today. Even during the last Corona season, their role was not insignificant. I would really appreciate it. But some professionals mock this noble profession of heartless cruelty among such kind-hearted medical professionals and scientists. This article reveals information about such a group.
Forced use of people for medical research was common in the past when there were no human rights organizations. This was common during the First and Second World Wars. No matter how many human rights organizations there are in the world today, it is no secret that this kind of inhumane research is still happening in the world. They will be revealed to the world only after many more years have passed. Also, most of the inhumane medical research that took place at that time was initiated by the United States of America, which is very proud of human rights today.
The initiative for this inhumane research was also taken by the United States of America. This can be considered the most inhuman kind of research conducted in Guatemala in the years 1946–1948 under the leadership of America. Sexually transmitted diseases or other venereal diseases became a big health threat at that time. Army soldiers were mostly hit by it. This was so widespread among the military that there were about 350,000 syphilis-infected soldiers in the United States at the time, and it was a powerful cause of the destruction of two army fleets. Although there was a cure for syphilis at that time, it was a very painful procedure. That is what led America to turn to this inhumane research.
Accordingly, in 1917, Dr. Charles Cutler was anxious to develop a medicine that could prevent social diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhea, and choroid by injecting penicillium into rabbits. His focus is on Guatemala and its failure. At that time, 53.7% of the Guatemalan population were very poor citizens. Another thing is that the black-white apartheid that existed at that time also led to the use of Guatemala, which was mostly inhabited by black people. Accordingly, in 1944, this inhumane research began in a prison called Terre Haute in Guatemala. Firstly, the prison inmates voluntarily participated in this research. There, they have been forcibly infected with diseases like syphilis and gonorrhea. Dr. Cutler's goal was to find out how well antibiotics, such as Penicillium, worked for these diseases. But here, various obstacles and limitations arose for Cutler. To avoid them, they are using a 300-bed hospital near the Terre Haute prison. As a result of the negotiations between the American government and the Guatemalan government, Cutler has the support of Guatemalan doctors.
Accordingly, a large number of prison inmates and a large number of patients of various age groups who were receiving treatment in government hospitals and mental hospitals were forcibly brought here. Here, these people are forced to have physical relations with s*x workers. Here, the syphilis virus is injected into the cervix of these s*x workers. Therefore, people who have physical relationships with these people are also affected by this disease. Also, this disease is spread by smearing pathogenic bacteria and viruses on the wounds of these people. When they showed signs of infection, samples taken from their spinal cords were tested for the antibodies produced. No one infected with these diseases received proper medical treatment. By the year 1953, 83 innocent people who had been subjected to this research had passed away. About 700 people who were here received some treatment, but they are still suffering from side effects.
Many doctors consider this research one of the most inhumane in the history of medicine. Even Guatemala later condemned this as a crime against humanity. On October 1, 2010, US President Barack Obama and the US Secretary of State apologized to Guatemala for the breach of medical ethics in this research. However, none of them advocated justice for the people or their families who were harmed by this research. Several cases were filed against this in the American Supreme Court, but none of them were successful.

Buddhism and Recycling - More connected than you think !

Waste, E waste, plastic and non - decomposable waste are the most common problem that the whole world faced. As we all now this huge problem caused environmental issues, mainly it harms wildlife, caused water pollution, soil degradation, harms human health and many more.

Therefore various countries have implement various tactics for waste management. They are sanitary landfilling, some countries use trash to Energy sourse, incineration, Recycling, Reuse... etc. Recycling is one of the most common and useful methods many countries already enforced.

As a Sri Lankan, as a Sinhalese, I learned first lesson of Recycling from my religious books. As buddhists, at age 12, I attended Dhamma School on every Sunday. There, Our chief monk of Dhamma School taught us this Story.

This story revolves around King Udheni and Ananda Thero. Ananda thero served as the Buddha's attendent and closest monk to the Buddha. Ananda Thero blessed with remarkable memory as well.

Once Ananda Thero and 500 monks went to see king Udheni at his Royal Garden. There Ananda thero delivered a Dhamma sermon to king udheni and his 500 queens. After that these 500 queens who attened Dhamma talk bacame happy and gifted 500 yellow robes to Ananda thero.

Then king Udheni summoned these queens and asked what they gifted to Ananda Thero. Queen said that they gifted 500 robes.

King Udheni amazed and think What does Ananda thero used for these 500 Robes. So, King Udheni went to see Ananda Thero and asked the question that bothering him in his mind.

Well, Ananda Thero replied silently, " we gave these robes to the monks who already have tattered robes. Then these monks gave this tattered robes to the monks who had ragged robes"

After that, these monks use that ragged robes as bed sheets. Robes that cannot use as bedsheets uses for pillow cases. Robes that cannot use as pillow cases too used as floor mat.

Ragged robes that cannot used as floor mat used for mop the floor.

Robes cannot even be used to mop floor mixed and grinded with clay and used to apply temple walls.

Ananda thero explained this to King Udheni and King get happy about Ananda thero's frugality.

This is how i learned about recycling, frugality through my religion. This lesson helps me to careful spending and manage my economy.

How an Once-Prosperous Nation Falls Into Crisis
Why is Somalia so poor now?

Are there any poor countries in the world that rely on the treasury? Yes, one of them is Sri Lanka, my home country...
Somalia is the other country we'll be discussing.

When we heard the country name " Somalia" at once came in to our mind that desserted land burning in harsh sunlight, thin living beings with skeletoned bodies. Yes thats not lie. When i always see these sceneries i think about the value of my motherland Sri lanka, with greeny surroundings, blessed with nature and kind hearted people who always ready to help.

Somalia is bodering to Kenya and Djibouti. This is extreamly impoverish country. Many of them Spend pastoral life until past. As you know they do not have enough food or not even clean drinking water too, 14.3 million population survived by depending rations that provide United Nations Organization. 60% of population only have less than 1$ income. This is not all, they are suffering with 30 years civil war and 1 million people dies per year due to HIV Aids.

I m sure all of you guys, already heard this from Somalia, But have you ever heard this amazing things about Somalia.

1. They belong the longest coastline in Africa
They belong longest coastline which boardered to Indian ocean in the East, Gulf of Aden in the North. As you can see these coastline connects both Asia and Africa. This is important because this is a key location for sail boats between Asia and Africa. As you know having a long coastline means that country is blessed with so many marine resources.

But however noone get any benifits from them as i mentioned above. Not any boats sail on this coastline because of the Somalian Pirates. They are kidnapping merchant ships sails on this coastline and ask ransom. Therefore ships neglect these coastline.

2. Country of Camels
Most african countries like Somalia has arid climate and limited water resource. Therefore Animal like camels can live and tolerate this climate. When we talk about Somalia Camels are essential part of Somalian culture. A person owned many camels considered as the wealthy person in Somalian society. These camels provide them milk, meat, skin... etc. Camel's milk contains high nutrition.
3. Once they exported food.
Somalia is known today is a Land of Hungry. But, do you belive that, Once they exported Charcoal, fish, banana, sugar and corn to the whole world.

Historically, this country was famouse for produce frankincense. They used this plants such as Boswellia sacra and Boswellia frerena which is rapidly grown in arid climate. At that time Somalian frankincense reached beyond the Mediterranean Sea market.

But, Unfortunately, they do not export any of them today.

3. Country with Rich History.
Somalia has ruins of old cities. When we see ruins old Mogadishu city, Habour city of Zeila, ancient city of Hargeiza we can imagine how rich history they had. Also they has rich oral tradition. According to Somalian culture reciting poems, telling stories are main elements.

Somalia has two rivers named Jubba and shabelle. It helped agriculture and other livelihood.

Then What happened to Somalia now???
As my home country it is because of politicians. Somalia has experienced political instability for decades. Shrewd politicians of this country only think about their pocket. They led Somalia to hell.

There are 18 political parties in this country. Every politicians who came to power misappropriate money of innocent people, they steal their aids too.

I think Somalia got this fate because they did not choose correct politicians.

The Housemaid Kanthee
Manesha went to the office that morning feeling surprisingly relieved. Her maternity leave had just ended, and she had been deeply worried about who would look after her baby while she was at work. Her husband, Anuruddha, was working abroad, and her own mother suffered from dementia, making it impossible for her to care for the child.
During the first few months after the baby was born, Anuruddha's mother stayed with them and helped tremendously. However, she couldn't continue doing so forever. Although she loved her grandson dearly, she had many responsibilities back in her village. She had to cook for Anuruddha's father, who worked in the rice fields, take care of the family's cattle, and manage countless household chores.
Desperate to find someone trustworthy, Manesha began searching for a reliable housemaid who could look after her son, even if it meant paying a generous salary. When she mentioned her problem to her friend Ishini, Ishini recommended an older woman from her village named Kanthee.
Ishini was known for being kind, gentle, and trustworthy. Because of that, Manesha assumed her aunt would have the same qualities. She also felt it was much safer to hire someone recommended by a close friend than to bring a complete stranger into her home.
That was how Kanthee came to work for Manesha's family.
Kanthee had a pleasant personality and genuinely seemed to love children. Feeling reassured, Manesha was finally able to leave her son in Kanthee's care and return to work without constant worry.
At first, Kanthee appeared to be an excellent caregiver. The little boy quickly grew attached to her. She cared for him affectionately and also managed the household chores well.
Impressed by her dedication, Manesha gave Kanthee a salary increase, bought her things she liked, and even helped support her family whenever possible.
But gradually, Manesha began noticing changes in her son. His skin seemed to be getting darker, as though he was spending long hours under the hot sun. Whenever she asked Kanthee about it, the answer was always the same.
"He plays outside a lot, madam. He loves running around in the sun."
When Manesha mentioned it to Anuruddha, he wasn't concerned either.
"Kids run around and play outside all the time. Don't worry so much," he said.
One day, Manesha developed a severe headache and took a short leave from work to return home early. The moment Kanthee realized she had come home unexpectedly, she became visibly nervous.
That day, Manesha noticed that her son looked unusually exhausted. His skin was much darker than before, as if he had spent the entire day under the scorching sun. When she questioned Kanthee again, she gave the very same explanation.
A few days later, Manesha was traveling in her office vehicle on an official assignment. As they approached a busy intersection, she noticed a strangely familiar woman standing by the roadside, carrying a small child while begging from passing motorists.
She looked closer.
It was Kanthee.
And the child in her arms was Manesha's son.
While Manesha was away at work, Kanthee had been taking the little boy onto the streets and using him to beg for money.
Without hesitation, Manesha got out of the vehicle and confronted her.
"You're coming with me to the police station right now!" she shouted angrily.
She immediately hired a three-wheeler and took Kanthee straight to the nearest police station.
At the station, Kanthee broke down in tears.
"Madam... I borrowed money from someone in my village. My salary wasn't enough to repay the debt... that's why I did this," she sobbed.
Manesha left the police station with one firm decision: she would never again leave her son in the care of someone she did not truly know.
Note: Please remember that not every housemaid is like this. This story should not be taken as a reflection of all domestic workers.

Previously, it was common in Sri Lanka for supermarkets and grocery stores to provide you with a free polythene bag to store your purchases.

As a result, Sri Lanka experienced environmental pollution. It goes without saying that introducing a large number of polyethylene bags into the environment caused serious environmental issues.

There have been various decisions made regarding the polyethylene issue from time to time, but none have been successful. The problem remains the same.

However, beginning November 1st, 2025, the Sri Lankan government has announced that supermarkets and grocery stores will no longer be able to provide free polythene bags; customers will have to pay for them as well. The price of the polyethylene bag must be included on the bill.

Following this announcement, people began bringing bags to supermarkets and grocery stores to carry their purchases. And now I always bring a cloth bag.

Polyethylene appears to be less widely used in Sri Lanka now. I believe we can continue this in the future.

Who would have thought Goddess Kali would do something like this…?” 🙏
“Sumathipala, are the fruit baskets ready?” asked Minister Janajeeva while checking the time. There was still half an hour left before the Modara Kali Temple opened. Since it was a holiday, the roads were not very busy. They could reach there within 20 minutes. Besides, the minister’s secretary had already informed the temple priest about his visit, so there was nothing much to worry about.
To be honest, this was not a good period in Minister Janajeeva’s life. After serving as a minister for 12 years, his government was defeated during the last presidential election, bringing a major political change to the country. As if that were not enough, he also lost his parliamentary seat in the parliamentary election that followed.
Minister Janajeeva knew well that in politics one must accept both victory and defeat equally. But now he had to hand over his official residence, and all his official security officers had already been removed. The two security officers currently with him were retired army personnel hired using his personal funds.
After retirement, he himself did not feel he needed security officers. But his wife felt the absence deeply. When he had power, he was Big wig who could Controll the entire region. People used to pass by his house with respect and fear. At that time, nothing was lacking—power, influence, supporters, and authority were all there. The house was always full of visitors, and the kitchen helpers preparing tea for guests over and over again.
But now… there noone to help with housework. The same people who once bowed their heads in fear now didn’t even treat him like dust beneath their feet. Recently, he was also removed from his position as a party organizer. His wife was extremely upset that despite all his service to the party—even shouting himself hoarse in support—it gave him no position at all. Soon they would have to leave the official residence as well. With the new government in power, things were becoming increasingly difficult.
More than all that, there was a serious problem troubling him. During his time as Fisheries Minister, a young woman who worked at a nightclub had died under suspicious circumstances. The new government had reopened the investigation into that case.
Earlier, many believed it was a su***de, and the previous government had quietly buried the case. But now that it was being reopened, the minister became extremely anxious. In the past, he could influence everyone—from forensic doctors to junior police officers—with money. But he knew that would not work with the new Goverment. Although several financial allegations had also been made against him, he believed his lawyers could handle those. However, this case was different.
Since hearing the news, he had barely eaten or drunk anything. Recently he had even realized that his lawyers were avoiding him. So he decided to visit the Modara Kali Temple, pray about his troubles, and ask Goddess Kali to punish the Justice Minister who, he believed, was falsely implicating him in a murder case. That was why he was preparing for this visit.
He had instructed Sumathipala to prepare the fruit baskets properly. Sumathipala always handled such Situations because he was experienced. The baskets contained everything—watermelon, oranges, apples, guavas, mangoes, dragon fruit, bananas, papayas, and more. Another basket had a king coconut, incense sticks, and fragrant jasmine flower garlands. Yet another basket contained 10 packets of milk. Thinking that might not be enough, Sumathipala sent someone back to the shop and bought 10 more packets.
Carrying the baskets, the minister confidently got into his Pajero and headed to the temple. He strongly believed Goddess Kali would protect him. After all, he had prepared for this visit by avoiding meat and fish for an entire week. Surely the goddess would not ignore such devotion.
On the way, he discussed the case with his security officer:
“Look here,” he said, “that Justice Minister is trying to frame me for that nightclub woman’s incident. The forensic doctor’s report clearly states it was a su***de. And there’s no CCTV footage showing that I even visited the nightclub that day.”
The security officer nodded in agreement.
However, deep inside, the minister knew the truth—that he had bribed the forensic doctor and even gifted him a Pajero. He also knew he had paid the nightclub security staff to erase the CCTV footage.
Soon they arrived at the temple.
The offerings were arranged grandly. The minister prayed that the Justice Minister who was trying to falsely accuse him should be destroyed. He circled a coconut seven times around his head and smashed it on the ground as part of the ritual.
Afterward, he walked around the temple with the priest. A little later, they heard some commotion near the entrance.
“Sir, we’re finished!” cried one of his closest security officers as he ran inside in tears.
The minister and the priest rushed outside.
A police team had surrounded the area. The officer-in-charge approached him with a stern face. Normally, this officer would salute him respectfully. But today his face looked as if it would explode with anger.
“We are arresting you, Janajeeva Ekanayake, on charges of murdering Sandra Abeysinghe. SI Piyadasa, handcuff him,” the officer shouted.
Everyone present—the priest and the crowd—stood stunned.
Thus the Sandra Abeysinghe murder case was heard in court. The court sentenced Minister Janajeeva to life imprisonment with hard labor.
As he stepped out of the courthouse and boarded the prison bus, his wife collapsed to the ground crying:
“If only we hadn’t gone to offer prayers to Goddess Kali that day, this wouldn’t have happened!”

Moral:
If you seek help from the gods or pray for justice, you must first be righteous yourself.
Seeking divine help while being guilty can lead to serious consequences, because even the gods do not tolerate injustice.
Note: This story was not intended to insult or promote any religious beliefs.

According to the Sri Lankans, Seegiriya was King Kashyapa's kingdom.
According to Indian Friends, Seegiriya was the kingdom of King Ravana.

Every foreign visitor to Sri Lanka skips over this incredible wonder reluctantly. Of course, engineering, water, and architecture all make good use of its amazing design. You demonstrated that if you ever came here.

But in my view, Seegiriya is more than just an archaeological or historical site. Many centuries' worth of unsolved mysteries can be found there. On this point, I believe you all concur with me.

There is little information about Seegiriya that many of us have learned from books or school. Many books, sources, and your history teachers simply state that it is either King Ravana's or King Kasyapa's design. Or perhaps someone claims that prior to King Kashyapa's arrival, it was a monastery.

I visited there at the age 19. That Was a wonderful tour. I climed that huge Boulder and Seegiriya painting of Apsara's. It also an unsolved Story yet. Because there are various opinions and Stories behind these Painted figures. Everyone who saw these painting have several Questions. Who were they? Why did they lived here? Were they concubines of King Kasyapa? Or Were they Queen Mandodari and her maids?

This is not just a Question for us. This is the question that existed since the era when people Wrote Seegiri rhymes on mirror wall. In the 8th Century a person named " Vajraman" Who wrote rhyme on Seegiri Mirror wall asked " Who was this Sigiri Apsaras and Why Did they lived here?"

However, Sigiriya is the place hiding many mysteries over centuries. If you ever hope to visit Sri Lanka, do not miss this wonder.

Note :- These are Ai generated images Which shows construction of Sigiriya.
