𝗨𝗡𝗘𝗣: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗮 𝟭.𝟱°𝗖 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀, 𝘆𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁, 𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁 𝘁𝗼, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀.

𝑵𝒂𝒊𝒓𝒐𝒃𝒊, 2 𝑺𝒆𝒑𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 2026: A rise in global temperatures is anticipated to exceed 1.5°C in the coming years, leading to increased climate threats and consequences. Nevertheless, a new report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) indicates that actions can still be taken to restrict warming, adjust to its effects, and strive to bring temperatures back below the 1.5°C mark.

The report titled “Limiting Overshoot – Navigating exceedance of 1.5°C and pathways towards return” suggests that pursuing a strategy of “overshoot, peak, and decline” is the most viable remaining option to reduce both the extent and duration of warming beyond 1.5°C, with the aim of returning to that threshold as swiftly as possible.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘁?
Climate overshoot describes a phase when global temperatures exceed the 1.5°C threshold before potentially declining again. UNEP clarifies that the peak temperature reached and the duration spent above 1.5°C are critical factors, as prolonged and elevated warming can heighten climate risks and effects.

The report highlights that the world recorded its first full year above 1.5°C in 2024. However, climate scientists evaluate the Paris Agreement's temperature target over extended, multi-decade spans rather than based on a single year’s data.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗨𝗡𝗘𝗣'𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀?
UNEP states that to cap the temperature peak, immediate and ongoing decreases in greenhouse gas emissions, including methane, are essential on the path toward achieving net-zero emissions.

Additionally, the report underscores the significance of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) in lowering temperatures after peak levels are reached. This process involves extracting carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and sequestering it through methods like afforestation and other techniques.

Simultaneously, nations must enhance their adaptation strategies to address both present and future climate challenges. UNEP cautions that there may be limits to how much adaptation can be achieved and that some consequences may become irreversible, especially if peak warming is not minimized.

𝑨𝒄𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝑼𝑵𝑬𝑷, 𝒄𝒓𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 1.5°𝑪 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒅 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒆𝒒𝒖𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒂𝒃𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒈𝒆𝒕.
The report points out that the scale and duration of an overshoot can still be shaped by climate initiatives. Keeping the temperature peak as low as feasible and reducing the time spent above 1.5°C can alleviate climate risks and simplify adaptation efforts.

Hence, the report advocates for persistent climate action instead of resignation. Both mitigation and adaptation must advance concurrently as countries face escalating climate change risks.
