A copper-based drug may have just reopened one of Alzheimer’s biggest biological “drains.”
Scientists at Monash University have tested an experimental compound called Cu(ATSM), which delivers copper into the brain and appears to restore P-glycoprotein pumps at the blood-brain barrier. These pumps help clear amyloid-beta, one of the toxic proteins linked to Alzheimer’s disease. When they fail, harmful waste can build up in the brain.
In preclinical Alzheimer’s models, the treatment reduced toxic amyloid-beta by 42% over 56 days and improved spatial learning by nearly 44%. Researchers stress that this is not yet an approved Alzheimer’s treatment, but the results are promising because Cu(ATSM) has already been safety-tested in trials for other neurodegenerative diseases.
Instead of only targeting plaques after they form, this approach may help repair the brain’s own waste-removal system — opening a fascinating new path in dementia research.
