Last Friday, we joined an insightful session hosted by the Malta Digital Innovation Authority in collaboration with the Office of the Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer, exploring the EU AI Act and its practical implications for public administration.

From 2 August 2026, important transparency obligations will apply to certain AI systems. Before deploying an AI solution, organisations should be asking:

- Is it clear when someone is interacting with an AI system?
- Is AI generated or manipulated content appropriately identifiable?
- Are deepfakes clearly disclosed?
- Are individuals informed when emotion recognition or biometric categorisation systems are being used?

These requirements cannot simply be added as legal notices once a system has been developed. They influence product design, user experience, data governance, monitoring and auditability from the very beginning.

We also appreciated the presentation by Neil Micallef, Senior Manager for Artificial Intelligence at MDIA, who provided valuable clarity on the AI Act’s implementation timeline.
