From Learning to Action: Building Export-Ready Southern African SMEs.

A powerful week of learning, networking, deal-making, connection and practical knowledge! On behalf of 3 Red Roses Investments, producers of Frances Crunchy and Tasty roasted groundnuts, I am deeply grateful for the privilege to attend the just-ended export readiness training. We are grateful to the Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat , in collaboration with the Better Than Cash Alliance , EU-TAF support to the AfCFTA, International Trade Centre and UNDP for investing in the capacity of Southern African SMEs to participate more effectively in intra-African trade. The training equipped us with practical knowledge across the full trade journey, including:
🌍 Product value addition, standards and packaging
πŸ“œ AfCFTA Rules of Origin, Certificate of Origin and trade documentation
βœ… Certification and compliance
πŸ’° Trade finance and cross-border payments
πŸš› Trade facilitation, customs, logistics and supply chains
🀝 AfCFTA trading companies and market opportunities.

A special thank you goes to our wonderful trainer, Briggette Harrington, for making complex trade concepts practical, accessible and actionable.
As Director of Private Sector and Communication at the Secretariat Cynthia E. GNASSINGBE-ESSONAM so aptly put it, this phase is no longer β€œBusiness as Usual.”

And indeed, we are returning with knowledge, tools and a responsibility to share. We will take this knowledge back to our fellow women and youth in cross-border trade, support them to become more export-ready, as we apply these lessons in our own enterprises.
This is what AfCFTA implementation looks like: moving from policy and negotiations to practical capacity, real businesses, real products and real trade across African borders resulting in markets and opportunities for women and youth.

From regional to continental market access: we are the "Women" in the AfCFTA Protocol on Women and Youth in Trade.

Day 1 of the Regional Capacity Building program for Business Support Organisations (BSOs) and Women- and Youth led SMEs on Export Readiness for the Southern African cohort kicked off today in Gaborone, Botswana. 3 Red Roses Investments, producers of Frances Crunchy and Tasty roasted groundnuts are participating in the regional gathering organized by the African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat (AfCFTA) Secretariat in collaboration with Than Cash Alliance the -TAF support to the AfCFTA and other partners where practical tools for continental trading will be shared.

For years, Africa negotiated the architecture of the Continental Free Trade Area. Today, the conversation has shifted to implementation β€” connecting African businesses to markets, finance, standards, technology, buyers, regional value chains and opportunities to scale.
And women and youth are being placed at the centre of this transformation.

The AfCFTA Protocol on Women and Youth in Trade recognises that women and young people are not simply beneficiaries of continental trade. We are economic actors, producers, processors, entrepreneurs, traders and exporters.
We are now witnessing trade agreements translating into real opportunities for women and youth.

As I participate in the AfCFTA SME Booster Programme, I look forward to learning, connecting, building partnerships and helping demonstrate what it means to move from negotiations to implementation to enterprise growth and to inclusive intra-African trade.

It is an exciting journey!
