At the National Climate Governance Summit 2026, Edward Vrkic, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam, highlighted one of the most underfunded yet essential pillars of climate action: adaptation.

While climate mitigation has attracted more than US$5 trillion in investment over the past two decades, adaptation continues to receive only a small share of global climate finance. For ASEAN, where climate risks continue to intensify, investing in resilience is no longer optional, it is essential.

A key takeaway was that adaptation should not be viewed as a cost, but as an investment that protects communities, businesses and economies from the growing impacts of climate change. Edward also emphasised the importance of recognising nature as critical infrastructure, calling for stronger regional collaboration, innovative financing and greater investment in nature-based solutions.
