“Visionary” Oshiomhole, “Short-Sighted” Obi? Let’s Talk About That.

So, according to Senator Adams Oshiomhole, Peter Obi lacks the long-term vision required to lead Nigeria.

Interesting.

But before we accept that narrative, perhaps we should ask a few simple questions.

Did Peter Obi become wealthy by building a mansion with public funds? Did he become successful by holding political office for years? Or did he build his career and wealth primarily through the private sector before entering politics?

Now, compare that with the story of Adams Oshiomhole.

Oshiomhole rose from being a tailor and labour leader to becoming the Governor of Edo State and later a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. That is an impressive political journey, and nobody should take that achievement away from him.

But here is where the conversation becomes uncomfortable.

In a country where public officials often emerge from office significantly wealthier than when they entered, Nigerians have every right to ask questions about the sources of such wealth. How are these assets acquired? What are the legitimate sources of income? Are they properly declared and accounted for?

These are not unreasonable questions. They are questions that should apply to every public official, regardless of political party or status.

Now, when Oshiomhole mocks Peter Obi's vision, perhaps Nigerians should also examine the kind of vision we want from our leaders.

Is vision about building an enormous mansion?

Is it about owning expensive cars and flying private or chartered aircraft?

Or is it about leaving behind something that benefits millions of people?

Peter Obi's supporters would argue that his vision is reflected in his emphasis on education, healthcare, infrastructure, savings, and investment in human capital.

His critics may disagree, and they have every right to do so.

But political debates should not become a contest over who can display the most wealth.

The real question should be:

What did you achieve with the opportunity you were given, and what did you leave behind for the people?

If a politician becomes wealthy after years in public office, Nigerians deserve transparency.

If another politician chooses a more modest lifestyle, that should not automatically make him “short-sighted.”

Perhaps the real measure of vision is not the size of the house you build for yourself, but the size of the impact you create for your people.

So, if Oshiomhole believes Peter Obi lacks vision, Nigerians should be allowed to ask:

Vision for whom? Vision measured by what standard? And, most importantly, what does that vision ultimately deliver to the Nigerian people?

At the end of the day, political leaders should be judged by their integrity, transparency, competence, accountability, and measurable impact—not merely by the size of their mansions or the volume of their political speeches.

That is the conversation Nigeria deserves.
