.A HANDSHAKE, A HUG OR JUST “HI”?
Greetings can tell you a lot about a culture.
In different Western societies, people may greet with a handshake, hug, wave, nod or simply say hello.
Across Africa, greetings can carry additional meaning, especially when greeting elders or people in positions of respect.
What is your natural greeting when meeting someone for the first time? Culturora

GRADUATION: WHO ARE YOU REALLY CELEBRATING?
Graduation ceremonies are important across many Western countries... Students wear gowns and caps, receive certificates and celebrate with family and friends.
Across Africa, graduation can carry an equally powerful meaning—but often with an even bigger family celebration... For many families, one person's graduation represents years of sacrifice by many people.
When someone graduates in your family, who deserves the biggest celebration—the graduate or the parents?

WHY DO SOME TRADITIONAL CLOTHES HAVE SO MANY LAYERS?
It isn’t always about fashion—sometimes, clothing is a language.
Across different cultures, every extra layer carries meaning. Intricate garments like the Japanese Kimono, West African Aso Oke, and Andean Pollera skirts use layering to communicate:
• Status & Wealth: More fabric and complex weaves historically signaled high standing.
• Identity & Heritage: Specific patterns reveal your age, marital status, or local community.
• Occasion & Honor: Extra layers are worn during landmark life events, honoring tradition and ancestors.
What looks like pure decoration to an outsider is actually a storied cultural record.
Good morning..

WHY DO SOME TEENAGERS DREAM OF GETTING A DRIVER’S LICENSE?
In parts of the Western world—especially across suburban North America and rural Europe, in places like Texas, Alberta, or regional France—getting a driver's license can be a major teenage milestone....
It can mean true independence: driving to school, work, social hangouts, or extracurricular activities without depending on parents or limited bus schedules.
In contrast, across many vibrant African cities—such as Lagos with its widespread danfos, Nairobi with its iconic matatus, or Cairo with its extensive metro network—public transportation, shared rides, family carpooling, and walking play a much bigger role in daily life.
At what age should young people be allowed to start driving?

GRANDPARENTS: LIVE WITH YOU OR VISIT YOU?
In some Western societies, older adults may live independently or in retirement communities.
In many African families, living with extended family or having grandparents closely involved in family life is more common.
Neither approach tells the whole story—families simply organize themselves differently.
Would you rather have your grandparents living with you or living nearby..

WHAT LOOKS “NORMAL” TO YOU MAY BE STRANGE SOMEWHERE ELSE. 👀
For instance:
A greeting — like the traditional cheek-kissing greeting commonly used among friends and family in Turkey.
A meal — like sharing dishes at the centre of the table in China, where meals are often enjoyed communally.
A wedding — like the colourful traditional ceremonies in Nigeria, the elaborate henna traditions found in parts of North Africa and the Middle East.
A hairstyle — like the traditional Chinese hairstyles that could reflect age, marital status, social position, or cultural identity.
A piece of clothing — from Yoruba aso-oke to the colourful Maasai shúkà worn in parts of East Africa.
Even the way we show respect — such as kneeling, lowering your gaze, using specific words for elders, or following particular gestures of respect.
Culture quietly teaches us what feels normal.... And that's why seeing the world through another culture can be so fascinating. 🌍
What is one everyday tradition from your culture that you think an outsider might find surprising?
