Here are some Android Back-up Tips:

If you want to update the firmware of your Android phone, it’s important to back up your contacts and apps. Everything else is individual, like sms messages, calendar and notes. In fact, you have the option of syncing your contacts, calendar and notes to Google already, so you don’t have to worry about that. Still, things can go wrong if you rely too much on Google for syncing everything – and then again, what about backing up and restoring apps?

Here are a few ways to go about backing up your Android phone before you press the panic button.

STEP ONE
Back up your precious contacts. These could be just your SIM contacts, Google contacts, or even Facebook and what have you. Click on your Contacts button, press the menu button (left of the ‘home button’ on the Galaxy Note), click on More/Import-export/export to SD card. Confirm with an ‘Yes’.

STEP TWO
This is optional. If your messages are important, you can make use of many SMS backup apps on Google Play, the Android Marketplace. If you ask us, there’s one that does the job pretty well: SMS Backup & Restore Pro. And it’s free.

STEP THREE
All the effort you’ve taken in installing and uninstalling apps will be for nothing if you don’t keep a list of the apps installed (or forget to backup the apps), to restore after the firmware upgrade. There are several apps on the market that can do this, but the one I really like for its user interface and simplicity is ES File Explorer. Just open the app and follow this route after pressing the menu button: Manager/App Manager and press the ‘Multi-select button’ located at the top of file explorer. Now, select all the apps you want and press the menu button again. This time, you will click ‘Backup’. This will install all the apps (the .apk files needed to install and reinstall apps) to your SD card’s Backup folder.

STEP FOUR
However, the application data and phone settings require a backup, too. Your phone has this feature built-in. Just follow this path: Settings/Privacy settings. Say ‘yes’ to Back up my data and Automatic Restore by thumbing your checkmark to each of these settings.

STEP FIVE
It’s important to pause the power management tools embedded in the Android phone or the external apps you’ve downloaded. For example, if you were doing over-the-air software update and the new file is over 300MB, it will take more than an hour to download all of it. If you have Wi-Fi managed in your power management tool, it will disable Wi-Fi the moment the screen goes off. Similarly, anti-virus tools tend to interfere with software downloads and installation, so it’s better to uninstall them before you begin your software installation. You can do that by going over to Location and Security/Device administration and putting a checkmark to all the ones marked out there.

This is a question not a lot of people think of because they assume CD/DVDs will last forever. Guess what? It’s not true! Regular CDs and DVDs degrade with time and exposure to the elements. So what do you do to keep them as long as possible?

Let’s start with what you can do with regular CD/DVDs.

Use only CD-R/+R or DVD-R/+R. -RW discs designed to be rewritable are not suitable for long term storage.
Limit exposure to air and sunlight.
Store in a proper CD/DVD case – not a paper envelope.
Wipe the bottom of the CD/DVD clean of any fingerprints or residue with a lens tissue or clean microfiber cloth.
Make two copies! It’s always better to have a backup.

So what CD/DVDs do you want to buy if you’re concerned about long-term reliability?

When looking for archival CD/DVDs, you should pay attention to what the reflective layer is made out of and what dye is used. This information can be found in the manufacturers specifications for the disc.

The best discs are made using gold as part of the reflective layer. You can identify them by the manufacturer indicating just gold is used. They can be found online for $2.00 a piece in packs of 25. These are rated for 300 years of storage in archival grade storage conditions.

The second best style of CD/DVD are gold/silver hybrids which will mention both gold and silver, and can be found online for a bit cheaper (usually $1 to $2 per disc) in smaller packs.

The lowest quality of archive discs will be silver only. These are better than traditional discs, but not by that much. Usually these cheaper discs are sold for under $1.00 each.

Each of the above types of reflective layers can be made using different types of dyes. The best type of dye to look for isPhthalocyanine, the second best is Azo and the worst performing is Cyanine.

As far as CD vs DVD, there isn’t a difference in physical media that I know of in terms of lifespan – though by nature of there being less information stored on a CD it may be better to lose less of the “total” if you have 10 CDs and one goes bad versus all the information on one DVD. If it was me, I still might just make 3 copies of the same DVD – just in case.

Delivering fast boot times in Windows 8 (PART II)

Qualitatively, people say they prefer to shut down because they want to have their PC completely “off” so that it uses no power – either to preserve battery life or to reduce their energy use. Hibernate is also a good option for this since it similarly has no power draw, and many people really like it. However, it’s clearly not for everyone, since one of the other things we’ve heard is that many people want to turn their PCs on and have it be a “fresh start” rather than running all of the stuff from their previous session. Sleep/resume is the best option for fast on/off transitions on today’s PCs, but it still consumes some power in order to preserve the contents of RAM, which means battery drain – even if it’s only a little bit on a well optimized system. All of this is happening with the backdrop of how we all use our mobile phones today, which is almost never restarting them, and always using what feels closest to a sleep-like state.

Our challenge then, was to design a way to meet all of these desires on today’s PCs without requiring some special new hardware. These were our goals:

Effectively zero watt power draw when off
A fresh session after boot
Very fast times between pressing the power button and being able to use the PC.

In Windows 7 we made many improvements to the boot path, including parallel initialization of device drivers, and trigger-start services, but it was clear we’d have to get even more creative (and less incremental) if we hoped to get boot performance anywhere close to fast enough to meet all of these needs.

Our solution is a new fast startup mode which is a hybrid of traditional cold boot and resuming from hibernate.

Before I go into exactly how it works though, a little background is probably helpful on how shutdown and boot works today in Windows 7.

Shutdown entails:

The user initiates a shutdown by selecting “shut down” from the Start menu, or by pressing the power button; or an application initiates shutdown by calling an API such as ExitWindowsEx() or InitiateShutdown().
Windows broadcasts messages to running applications, giving them a chance to save data and settings. Applications can also request a little extra time to finish what they’re doing.
Windows closes the user sessions for each logged on user.
Windows sends messages to services notifying them that a shutdown has begun, and subsequently shuts them down. It shuts down ordered services that have a dependency serially, and the rest in parallel. If a service doesn’t respond, it is shut down forcefully.
Windows broadcasts messages to devices, signaling them to shut down.
Windows closes the system session (also known as “session 0”).
Windows flushes any pending data to the system drive to ensure it is saved completely.
Windows sends a signal via the ACPI interface to the system to power down the PC.

And boot entails:

After pressing the power button, the PC’s firmware initiates a Power-On Self Test (POST) and loads firmware settings. This pre-boot process ends when a valid system disk is detected.
irmware reads the master boot record (MBR), and then starts Bootmgr.exe. Bootmgr.exe finds and starts the Windows loader (Winload.exe) on the Windows boot partition.
Essential drivers required to start the Windows kernel are loaded and the kernel starts to run, loading into memory the system registry hive and additional drivers that are marked as BOOT_START.
The kernel passes control to the session manager process (Smss.exe) which initializes the system session, and loads and starts the devices and drivers that are not marked BOOT_START.
Winlogon.exe starts, the user logon screen appears, the service control manager starts services, and any Group Policy scripts are run. When the user logs in, Windows creates a session for that user.
Explorer.exe starts, the system creates the desktop window manager (DWM) process, which initializes the desktop and displays it.

The key thing to remember though is that in a traditional shutdown, we close all of the user sessions, and in the kernel session we close services and devices to prepare for a complete shutdown.

Now here’s the key difference for Windows 8: as in Windows 7, we close the user sessions, but instead of closing the kernel session, we hibernate it. Compared to a full hibernate, which includes a lot of memory pages in use by apps, session 0 hibernation data is much smaller, which takes substantially less time to write to disk. If you’re not familiar with hibernation, we’re effectively saving the system state and memory contents to a file on disk (hiberfil.sys) and then reading that back in on resume and restoring contents back to memory. Using this technique with boot gives us a significant advantage for boot times, since reading the hiberfile in and reinitializing drivers is much faster on most systems (30-70% faster on most systems we’ve tested).

If there’s one thing that drives geeks crazy, it’s a slow-booting system. That’s why for Windows 8, Microsoft went back to the drawing board to redesign the boot process for speed.

What they came up with was a hybrid of cold booting and hibernate mode – essentially the internal Windows processes use hibernate all the time, but the drivers start up like they would on a cold boot.

Delivering fast boot times in Windows 8 (PART I)

When it comes to talking about "fundamentals" we want to start with boot time – no feature gets talked about and measured more. We designed Windows 8 so that you shouldn't have to boot all that often (and we are always going to work on reducing the number of required restarts due to patching running code). But when you do boot we want it to be as fast as possible. This is a very deep topic and we have a lot of folks focused on it. We made a bigger leap in this area with Windows 8 than we have in a long time due in no small part to cooperation across the whole ecosystem. Data shows that 57% of desktop PC users and 45% of laptop users shut down their machines rather than putting them to sleep. Overall, half of all of users shut down their machines rather than putting them to sleep.
