PRAYER TO THE MARTYRS OF CHALCEDON

By Joseph-Mary Nwankwo (Padre Pio)

O holy Martyrs of Chalcedon,
you who kept faith when everything was taken from you, you know what it is to be afraid, and you know where strength comes from. Hear me now, for I am in need.

Stand beside me in this hour.
Bring my petition before the throne of Christ, whom you loved more than life itself. Where I am weak, ask that He make me strong. Where I am confused, ask that He give me light. Where I am afraid, ask that He give me peace.

Intercede for me in this trouble I bring before you: (name your need here). If it be God's will, obtain for me relief and a way forward. If the answer is not what I hope for, obtain for me the grace to trust, to endure, and never to lose hope in His mercy.

Holy Martyrs, you did not abandon Christ,
and He did not abandon you.
Pray that I too may be held fast,
that no trial may separate me from His love.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE MARTYRS OF CHALCEDON

By Joseph-Mary Nwankwo (Padre Pio)

The Martyrs of Chalcedon refers to a group of 49 Christians—most notably including Saint Euphemia—who were martyred together in 303 AD during the Diocletian Persecution in Chalcedon (modern-day Kadıköy, Istanbul, Turkey).

Here are 10 key facts about their lives, martyrdom, and enduring legacy:

(1). They Secretly Gathered as a Local Church Community

When the Roman proconsul Priscus ordered all residents of Chalcedon to gather for a mandatory pagan festival dedicated to the god Ares, 49 Christians hid together in a single home to secretly celebrate the Christian liturgy and pray.

(2). Many were Members of the Church Choir

Historical tradition notes that several members of this group comprised the local church choir. Their unity in liturgical song translated directly into their shared resolve when standing before the Roman authorities.

(3). Arrested During the Great Persecution
Under Roman Emperor Diocletian, the

"Great Persecution" sought to purge Christianity from the empire. The hiding place of the 49 believers was discovered, leading to their immediate arrest for refusing to offer sacrifices to pagan gods.

(4). Endured 19 Days of Interrogation

For 19 consecutive days, the 49 group members were subjected to intense public interrogation and torture to break their resolve. When none of them recanted their faith, the governor sent 48 of them off for imperial trial while isolating the youngest among them, Saint Euphemia, hoping isolation would break
her.

(5). Saint Euphemia Became the Group's Central Figure

Saint Euphemia ("the All-Praised") was a young, noble virgin who became the principal figure among the martyrs of Chalcedon. Left alone, she continued to pray for strength and refused all promises of wealth or status in exchange for apostasy.

(6). Miraculous Survival of Ex*****on Devices

According to hagiographical accounts, Euphemia survived several torture attempts—including a knife-studded wheel and a burning furnace—due to angelic intervention. Observing these events, two Roman soldiers (Victor and Sosthenes) refused to harm her, converted to Christianity on the spot, and were martyred themselves.

(7). Martyrdom in the Arena

Saint Euphemia was ultimately sentenced to death by wild beasts in the arena. Tradition states that while the animals initially left her untouched, a she-bear gave her a fatal wound, completing her martyrdom around 303 AD. Her parents managed to recover her body and buried her outside Chalcedon.

(8). A Great Cathedral Built Over Her Tomb

Following the conversion of the Roman Empire under Constantine, a massive basilica was constructed over Saint Euphemia's grave in Chalcedon, which became a prominent pilgrimage site in the East.

(9). The Miracle at the Council of Chalcedon (451 AD)

The Fourth Ecumenical Council (Council of Chalcedon) met in her basilica in 451 AD to resolve the Christological dispute over Christ's two natures (divine and human). According to Church tradition, both the Orthodox confession and the Monophysite confession were placed inside her sealed tomb. When opened days later, the Orthodox decree was found in her right hand and the opposing text at her feet, a event credited with solidifying Chalcedonian dogmatic theology.

(10). Commemorations and Feast Days

• September 16: The primary feast day commemorating Saint Euphemia and her fellow martyrs of Chalcedon.
• September 24: Commemorated specifically as the feast day for the 49 Martyrs of Chalcedon.
• July 11: Commemorated in Eastern Christian traditions to mark the miracle at the Council of Chalcedon.

10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SAINT PADRE PIO

By Joseph-Mary Nwankwo (Padre Pio)

(1). He bore the Stigmata for 50 years

On September 20, 1918, while praying before a crucifix, Padre Pio received the visible wounds of Christ (the stigmata) on his hands, feet, and side. The wounds bled continuously without healing or becoming infected for exactly 50 years, completely disappearing days before his death in 1968 without leaving scars.

(2). His famous motto was "Pray, Hope, and Don't Worry"

His spiritual direction was centered on complete trust in God. His most celebrated quote remains: "Pray, hope, and don't worry. Worry is useless. God is merciful and will hear your prayer."

(3). He possessed extraordinary spiritual gifts

Pilgrims, penitents, and fellow friars documented numerous mystical phenomena associated with him:
• Bilocation: Being seen in two places at once (e.g., attending to people in Rome while remaining in San Giovanni Rotondo).
• Reading of Souls: Discerning unconfessed sins or hidden intentions of penitents in the confessional.
• Odor of Sanctity: A distinct aroma of roses, violets, or sweet herbs surrounding his presence or relics.

(4). He spent up to 19 hours a day in the Confessional

Padre Pio viewed the Sacrament of Reconciliation as his primary apostolic mission. Tens of thousands of pilgrims traveled to San Giovanni Rotondo each year, waiting days for a chance to confess their sins to him.

(5). He founded a world-class hospital

Recognizing the deep physical suffering around him, Padre Pio initiated the construction of the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza ("Home for the Relief of Suffering") in San Giovanni Rotondo. Opened in 1956, it remains one of Europe's premier research and healthcare facilities.

(6). The Vatican initially restricted his ministry

Due to skepticism surrounding his stigmata and public notoriety, the Holy See placed several restrictions on Padre Pio between 1923 and 1933. He was prohibited from celebrating Mass publicly, writing letters, or meeting spiritual children. He accepted these decrees with profound obedience until Pope Pius XI reinstated his public ministry.

(7). He was a Capuchin Franciscan Friar

Born Francesco Forgione in Pietrelcina, Italy, in 1887, he entered the Capuchin Order at age 15, taking the religious name "Pio" (Pius) in honor of Pope Pius I. He lived most of his priesthood at the friary of San Giovanni Rotondo in southern Italy.

(8). He foretold Karol Wojtyła’s papacy

In 1947, a young Polish priest named Karol Wojtyła (the future Pope John Paul II) visited Padre Pio to make his confession. Accounts note that Padre Pio privately predicted Wojtyła would rise to the highest post in the Church—a prophecy fulfilled when he was elected pope in 1978.

(9). He died on September 23, 1968

Padre Pio passed away at the age of 81, holding his rosary and repeating the names "Jesus, Mary." His funeral was attended by over 100,000 mourners, and September 23 is commemorated as his liturgical feast day.

(10). He was canonized in 2002 by Pope John Paul II

Thirty-four years after his death, Pope John Paul II formally proclaimed Padre Pio a saint in St. Peter's Square before one of the largest crowds in Vatican history (estimated at over 300,000 people).

10 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT
SAINT MATTHEW THE APOSTLE

By Joseph-Mary Nwankwo (Padre Pio)

Saint Matthew the Apostle, also known as Saint Matthew the Evangelist, is one of the most prominent figures in Christian history.

Here are 10 key facts you need to know about his life, legacy, and impact:

(1). He Was a Tax Collector Before His Calling

Before becoming a disciple, Matthew worked as a publican (tax collector) in Capernaum for the Roman occupying forces. Tax collectors were widely despised in Jewish society because they were seen as traitors collaborating with Rome and were notorious for overcharging people for personal gain.

(2). He Originally Went by the Name Levi

In the Gospels of Mark and Luke, he is referred to as Levi, son of Alphaeus. It is believed that Jesus gave him the name Matthew—which means "Gift of God"—after he answered the call to follow Him.

(3). He Left Everything Immediately When Called

Matthew’s conversion was instant. According to Scripture, Jesus walked up to his tax booth and said two words: "Follow me." Matthew immediately stood up, left his lucrative job behind, and followed Jesus without hesitation.

(4). He Hosted a Famous Dinner for "Outcasts"

Shortly after leaving his job, Matthew hosted a banquet at his house for Jesus and His disciples. He invited his fellow tax collectors and "sinners." When religious leaders criticized Jesus for eating with social outcasts, Jesus gave His famous response: "I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

(5). He Written the First Gospel in the New Testament Canon

Tradition holds that Matthew authored the Gospel According to Matthew, placed first in the New Testament. His Gospel was written primarily for a Jewish audience, emphasizing fulfilled Old Testament prophecies to show that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah.

(6). His Symbol is a Winged Man or Angel

In Christian art and iconography, Matthew is traditionally represented by a winged man (or angel). This symbol comes from the book of Ezekiel and Revelation, chosen because Matthew’s Gospel begins with the human genealogy of Jesus, highlighting His human incarnation.

(7). He Preached Widely After the Resurrection

Following the Ascension of Jesus and the day of Pentecost, Matthew preached the Gospel in Judea before traveling abroad. Early Christian traditions record that he carried the ministry to regions such as Ethiopia, Persia, Parthia, and Macedonia.

(8). He is Recognized as a Martyr

While details of his death vary across historical sources, Christian tradition holds that he was martyred for his faith. One widely held tradition states that he was killed in Ethiopia at the order of a king after opposing the king's immoral marriage.

(9). He is the Patron Saint of Financial Workers

Because of his profession before meeting Jesus, Saint Matthew is venerated as the patron saint of bankers, accountants, tax collectors, financial officers, and bookkeepers.

(10). His Feast Day is Celebrated in September

In the Western Christian tradition (including Catholic, Lutheran, and Anglican churches), Saint Matthew’s Feast Day is celebrated on September 21. Eastern Orthodox churches celebrate his feast day on November 16.
