When a stranger approaches you and says; Please, could you hold this bag for me? I won't be long.
Many people would take it without a second thought but that's exactly where the danger lies.
A moment of politeness can quietly turn into a situation you never bargained for, so it pays to slow down and think before your hands do.

Before you agree to look after any bag, parcel, box or envelope from someone you don't know, 𝗙𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗢𝗪 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗦𝗘 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗣𝗦:

𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲.
Never take responsibility for something when you don't know what it contains. This is the single most important step. You are the one who will be found holding it, so you deserve to know exactly what you are agreeing to carry. If a person truly has nothing to hide, showing you the contents should not be a problem for them.

𝗦𝗮𝘆 𝗻𝗼 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗱, 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱, 𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗽.
If you can't verify the contents, it's fine to turn the request down. A locked bag or a taped-up box is designed to keep its contents hidden from you specifically, and that alone should tell you everything you need to know about the risk involved.

𝗥𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
A national ID, driver's license, voter's card or similar. Always ask to see it before agreeing to anything. Take note of the name and details shown, and if possible make a mental note or a photo of the document so there is a record of who you dealt with.

𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿.
Better still, have them call that number in front of you so you can confirm it's actually theirs. A genuine phone call that connects and is answered naturally adds real confidence that you are dealing with a real, reachable person.

𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆'𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗻𝗲.
A vague reply like "not too long" should raise a red flag. A trustworthy person will usually be able to give you a fairly specific answer, while someone with something to hide tends to stay deliberately unclear.

𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲.
Don't let someone vanish for an unknown stretch of time while you're left holding their property. Once they are out of sight and out of reach, you lose every advantage you had, including the ability to return the bag or ask further questions.

𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.
Someone with nothing to hide won't be bothered by you taking precautions. Irritation, impatience, or pressure to hurry up and just take the bag are all signs worth paying close attention to.

𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗴𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝘀𝗲.
"I'm sorry, I can't help with that" is a complete sentence. You have no obligation to take custody of a stranger's belongings. No matter how the request is phrased or how urgent it is made to sound.

Nigerian judges have accepted WhatsApp messages as evidence in criminal cases, business disputes, debt recovery matters, and even divorce proceedings.

That angry message you sent at midnight. That business agreement you sealed over chat. That "just between us" conversation. All of it can be retrieved, printed, tendered in court, and used against you.
You do not need to sign a document to be held accountable. Your words — typed in seconds, can follow you into a courtroom.

𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁?
In Nigeria, the short answer is: 𝗬𝗘𝗦

A verbal agreement can be legally binding if it has the basics offer, acceptance, consideration, and intention to be bound. The law does not always require paper.

Some transactions must be in writing. Land deals, for example, require written documentation under the Land Use Act. A verbal agreement to sell land will not hold up in court no matter how sincere both parties were.
The bigger problem with verbal agreements is proof. When a dispute arises, it becomes your word against theirs. No document, no WhatsApp message, no witness. Courts cannot enforce what they cannot verify.

𝗦𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼?

Put it in writing. Always. Even a simple signed letter or exchange of messages creates a paper trail that protects you.

🟢 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗰𝘆 (𝗖 𝗼𝗳 𝗢)
• This is one of the most important land documents as it shows that the government recognizes the owner's right to the land.
• If the seller does not have it, ask why before proceeding.

🟢 𝗗𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁
• This document shows how the current owner got the land. It helps you know whether the land was legally transferred from one owner to another.

🟢 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻
• This shows the exact location and size of the land. It helps you confirm that the land being sold is the same land shown on paper and it also helps you know if the land is in an area reserved by the government.

🟢 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗼𝗿'𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁
• Nigerian law requires the Governor's approval for many land transfers. Without it, the transaction may face legal problems in the future.

🟢 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝗽𝘁𝘀
• This helps you know if there are unpaid fees, ground rents, or other charges on the land. It prevents you from inheriting someone else's debt after buying the land.
