CHARCOAL + WOOD SHAVINGS: ONE PRACTICAL DEEP-LITTER TECHNIQUE

Many poultry farms have little management techniques they have developed over time that may not be obvious to someone just starting out.

One area people often overlook is deep-litter management.

Wood shavings are commonly used because they provide a soft, absorbent bedding material. When properly managed, incorporating a small amount of clean charcoal material can also be useful because charcoal is porous and can adsorb some moisture and odour compounds.

WHY PAY ATTENTION TO THE LITTER?

🐔 1. Better litter condition
Dry, loose litter is much better for birds than wet, compacted or caked litter.

🐔 2. Odour management
Charcoal can adsorb some odour-causing compounds, although it is not a substitute for proper ventilation and litter management.

🐔 3. Reduced wet spots
Good bedding management helps prevent persistent wet areas around drinkers and other high-moisture points.

🐔 4. Better bird comfort
Healthy litter gives birds a suitable surface for walking, scratching and natural behaviours.

🐔 5. Helps protect feet and feathers
Wet and poorly managed litter can contribute to dirty feathers and footpad problems. Keeping the litter dry is therefore an important part of flock management.

BUT HERE IS THE REAL SECRET 👇

There is no single ingredient that will make a poultry farm successful.

The real secret is MANAGEMENT.

Good litter + proper ventilation + correct stocking density + good drinker management + quality feed + clean water + biosecurity + vaccination + accurate records = a much stronger production system.

Charcoal is only one management tool, not a magic cure.

At ADEX CONSULT, we don't just tell farmers what to buy.

We analyse the system, identify the problem and build practical solutions around the farm.
