Let’s talk about what happens every time you walk into a Nigerian market lately. You buy a bag of rice or a gallon of vegetable oil today, and by next week, the price has jumped by 20% or 30%.While global economic factors and fuel costs play a massive role, there is a growing, unchecked problem in our local supply chains: artificial price gouging.Right now, intermediate wholesalers, market associations, and middle-tier distributors are weaponizing economic uncertainty.
Because there is a general expectation that things will get more expensive, many sellers are arbitrarily inflating prices far beyond their actual landing costs, simply because "everything has gone up."Here is why a targeted price control or strict price-monitoring framework is no longer just a policy debate—it's a survival necessity for the average Nigerian household: Protecting the Minimum Wage Earner: Microeconomic relief is useless if market cartels swallow the gains before the money even hits a worker's account. Without government-enforced baselines on essential food staples (like garri, beans, and rice), the purchasing power of the average citizen will continue to evaporate.Breaking Market Cartels: In many local markets, independent traders are legally or socially barred from selling below a fixed price dictated by union leaders. Price regulation shatters these anti-competitive monopolies and forces a return to fair, transparent pricing.
Curbing Speculative Exploitation: While the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) actively fights deceptive market practices, they explicitly do not control prices. We need a legal teeth upgrade—a modern Price Regulatory Framework—that compels major manufacturers and distributors to justify extreme, sudden price hikes on locally produced goods. Implementing strict oversight isn't about killing free enterprise; it's about drawing a line between fair profit and outright exploitation. He then literally secured an office space right inside the high-security Federal Secretariat in Abuja.🔹 The Operations: For months, the "agency" was fully functional. They hosted official meetings with unsuspecting Nigerian citizens and actual foreign diplomats. They even wrote to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs requesting a "note verbale" to help secure United States visas for their "staff"!🔹 The Finances: Investigators found that he operated a staggering 34 different bank accounts under fake names. He even managed to mislead the Accountant-General's office into opening an account for him directly with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The whole scheme finally blew up when the real Nigerian Investment Promotion Council (NIPC) complained to the Presidency that another "agency" seemed to be doing their exact job but at cross-purposes. The suspect was arrested and hit with an 8-count criminal charge at the Federal High Court. But it leaves a lot of questions unanswered.
