THE 100 HAUSA BILLBOARDS PROJECT | Case Study #005

When Literal Translation Becomes Literal Marketing

Advertising isn't judged by whether people understand the words.

It's judged by whether people feel something.
This Terra Seasoning billboard reminded me of that difference.

The original English campaign is actually strong:
"Unwrap Joy. Unleash Taste."

Short. Emotional. Sensory. It invites anticipation, it is exactly the feeling a seasoning brand wants consumers to associate with every meal.

Then it arrived in Hausa as:

"Bare Farin Ciki. Saki Daddadan Dandano."

Technically readable. Grammatically understandable.

But somewhere between the English brief and the Hausa billboard, the emotional intensity became harder to feel.

Here's why.

"Bare" literally means unwrap. But in everyday Hausa conversation, that isn't how people emotionally experience cooking.

A Northern mother reaching for her seasoning cube isn't thinking about unwrapping anything.
She's imagining the aroma filling the kitchen. The richness of the stew. The smiles around the dining mat. The moment family members begin drifting toward the pot before they're even called.

That's the experience the copy should unlock.

"Saki" as the equivalent of unleash has the same problem. The meaning is understandable. The feeling is weaker.

Most localisation asks: "How do we say this in Hausa?"

Great transcreation asks: "How should this feel to a Northern consumer?"

Those are two very different questions. And they produce two very different campaigns.

Northern Nigeria isn't simply a different language market. It's a market with its own cultural references, emotional triggers, and buying psychology.

The strongest campaigns don't translate words. They translate experiences.

That gap between what a brand intends to communicate and what the audience actually feels?

That's the Confusion Tax.

Most brands don't know they're paying it until campaign performance falls short of media spend.
The smartest brands reduce it before the campaign goes live.

πŸ“© DM me "AUDIT" β€” it's far cheaper to refine your message before it reaches the billboard than after it reaches the market.

Most business owners think the solution is to work harder.

Post more.

Spend more.

Hustle more.

But that's not what separates premium brands from struggling ones.

Premium brands don't win because they work harder.

They win because they build authority.

While others chase attention, they build trust.

While others compete on price, they compete on value.

While others try to be everywhere, they become known for something specific.

That's the difference.

Hustle might get you noticed.

Authority gets you chosen.

So instead of asking:

❌ "How can I work harder?"

Start asking:

βœ… "How can I build more authority?"

Because authority compounds.

And the brands that command respect are the brands that command premium prices.

The difference between struggling for clients and attracting premium clients is often one thing:

Positioning.

Most businesses position themselves as service providers.

"I design logos."

"I do marketing."

"I build websites."

But higher-paying clients aren't looking for services.

They're looking for outcomes.

They don't want a logo.

They want a brand people remember.

They don't want marketing.

They want more customers.

They don't want a website.

They want business growth.

The moment you stop selling what you do and start selling the result you create, everything changes.

βœ… Better clients

βœ… Better pricing

βœ… Better opportunities

βœ… Better growth

Your expertise may already be good enough.

Your positioning may be what's holding you back.

One shift can change how people see your brand.

And how people see your brand determines how much they're willing to pay.

A painful truth most business owners don't want to hear:

Your customers don't know your quality.

They only know your perception.

Before someone buys from you, they haven't experienced your service.

They haven't tested your product.

They haven't seen your work behind the scenes.

They judge what they can see:

βœ” Your branding

βœ” Your content

βœ” Your presentation

βœ” Your reputation

That's why two businesses can offer the same thing, yet one attracts more trust, more attention, and more sales.

The difference is perception.

People buy emotionally first.

Then they justify their decision with logic.

This is why branding is not decoration.

Branding is psychology.

It's the art of shaping how people think and feel about your business before they become customers.

The better product doesn't always win.

The better perceived brand often does.

So ask yourself:

What signals is your brand sending today?

πŸ’¬ Comment "PERCEPTION" if you're ready to build a brand people trust before they buy.

Make the image of the fourth slide carousel"Omo, being busy is not the same thing as making progress. πŸ‘€"

A lot of business owners are creating content every day...

Posting.
Designing.
Editing.
Writing captions.

Yet their business isn't growing.

Why?

Because activity without strategy is just noise.

The goal isn't to post more.

The goal is to create content that moves people closer to trusting you, buying from you, and remembering your brand.

Every piece of content should have a purpose.

βœ” Build authority
βœ” Create trust
βœ” Generate leads
βœ” Increase sales

If your content isn't connected to a strategy, you're just staying busy.

And busy doesn't always mean productive.

Strategy creates growth.

Noise creates exhaustion.

Do you agree? πŸ‘‡πŸ”₯

Nigeria will teach you one thing quickly:

Nobody respects what looks ordinary.

The same rule applies in business.

Many brands complain that customers don't take them seriously.

But when you look closely, the problem isn't the product.

It's perception.

People decide whether to trust you before they ever buy from you.

If your brand looks confused, inconsistent, or unsure, people assume your business is too.

Authority isn't about making noise.

It's about creating confidence.

The brands that command respect have three things:

βœ… Clarity in their message

βœ… Consistency in their presentation

βœ… Confidence in their positioning

And when respect is established:

Trust follows.

Opportunities follow.

Sales follow.

Stop trying to convince everyone.

Start positioning yourself as the obvious choice.

Because in business, the most respected brand usually wins.

"Oga, if cheap was the secret to success, everybody for don blow by now. πŸšΆπŸΎβ€β™‚οΈ"

One of the biggest reasons businesses stay small is because they think like buyers instead of builders.

They're always asking:
❌ How can I spend less?
❌ What's the cheapest option?
❌ How can I cut costs?

Meanwhile, premium brands ask:
βœ… How can I create more value?
βœ… How can I improve the customer experience?
βœ… How can I build more trust?

The truth?

Customers don't pay premium prices because you worked hard.

They pay because they believe what you're offering is worth more.

Cheap thinking focuses on cost.

Premium thinking focuses on value.

And your mindset will always determine the future of your brand.

Save this post and come back to it whenever you're tempted to compete on price instead of value. πŸ”₯

Your brand may be costing you opportunities without you realizing it.

Not because your service is bad.

Not because your product isn't valuable.

But because your brand looks inconsistent.

A beginner brand changes:
❌ Colors every week
❌ Content style every month
❌ Messaging every other day

A professional brand is recognizable instantly.

People trust what feels familiar.

And familiarity comes from consistency.

Your logo is only one part of your brand.

Your communication.
Your visuals.
Your positioning.
Your personality.

These are the things that make people remember you.

The brands that win are not always the most talented.

They're often the most consistent.

If you're serious about building a brand people trust, stop reinventing yourself every week.

Build consistency.
Build recognition.
Build authority.

πŸ“© DM "BRAND" if you're ready to level up your brand.

A harsh truth:

Posting content does not automatically make you an authority.

Many business owners are busy posting every day, chasing likes, following trends, and hoping for sales.

Meanwhile, their competitors are doing something different.

They're building authority.

Authority is what makes people:
βœ” Trust you faster
βœ” Remember your brand
βœ” Choose you over competitors
βœ” Pay premium prices

The goal is not to post more.

The goal is to become the person people think of first when they need a solution.

Anyone can create content.

Not everyone can build credibility.

So before your next post, ask yourself:

"Will this make me look busy, or will it make me look like an expert?"

Because attention gets views.

Authority gets clients.

Follow for more authority-building strategies.

Most business owners make the same mistake:

They talk too much about themselves.

"My business..."
"My experience..."
"My service..."

But customers aren't scrolling Instagram looking for businesses to admire.

They're looking for solutions to their problems.

The moment your marketing shifts from:
❌ "Look at us"

to

βœ… "Here's how we can help you"

everything changes.

More attention.
More trust.
More inquiries.
More sales.

Your customer is asking one question:

"Can you help me get the result I want?"

If your content answers that question clearly, you're already ahead of most businesses.
