UNTH CLARIFIES SUSPECTED DIPHTHERIA CASE, SAYS HOSPITAL SERVICES REMAIN NORMAL
The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu, has moved to clarify reports surrounding a suspected diphtheria case after concerns about a possible outbreak circulated.
The hospital said a post-mortem clinical review indicated that the condition initially suspected to be diphtheria was instead severe pharyngotonsillitis with massive exudate. According to the hospital, this has reduced concerns over a confirmed diphtheria case.
Despite the clarification, UNTH said it has continued to take precautionary steps. People who had close contact with the patient have been placed on prophylaxis, while contact tracing is ongoing as part of measures to prevent any potential spread of infection.
Hospital spokesperson Boniface Uchelue said clinical services at the facility have continued normally, with doctors, nurses, medical students and other healthcare workers attending to patients without interruption.
He also clarified that contrary to reports circulating online, the patient was from Lagos, rather than northern Nigeria.
UNTH further assured the public that it has the personnel and resources required to respond should a confirmed diphtheria case or another medical emergency arise.
The hospital urged members of the public not to avoid seeking medical care because of the reports, stressing that its services remain operational while precautionary and monitoring measures continue.
