Why AxeMen Eliminated Damino Damoche Even Though He Wasn’t The Target

Imagine being a young artist standing on the doorstep of your big break—your music gaining attention, your future beginning to take shape—only to have everything taken away in a matter of seconds because of an identity that wasn't even yours.

That was the heartbreaking fate of Damino Damoche, a 400-level Banking and Finance student of Lagos State University in February 2013.

Damoche was living two lives that, at the time, seemed completely separate. On one side was a young musician with genuine ambition. He had gone solo, was receiving radio airplay, and was reportedly discussing a possible collaboration with the late Nigerian rap star Dagrin.

On the other side was campus life.

Damoche was affiliated with the Buccaneer Confraternity. But he wasn't known as some feared campus enforcer. Like many young people drawn into confraternity circles, he appeared to see the organization as a source of brotherhood, identity, and influence.

When the lecture ended, he headed toward the university's second gate, preparing to go home.

He never made it.

A Black Axe hit squad had entered the area looking for a specific Eiye target. Their mission was simple: find the man they had come for and eliminate him.

But they couldn't find their intended target.

Then they saw Damoche.

What happened next was a horrifying case of mistaken identity.

According to accounts of the incident, some members
