A rare moment of alignment among AI leaders is running headlong into resistance from the White House, exposing a widening rift over how fast artificial intelligence should be allowed to advance.

Sam Altman of OpenAI, Dario Amodei of Anthropic, Elon Musk, and Demis Hassabis of Google DeepMind have backed a call to slow the pace of frontier AI development. The joint stance reflects mounting concern from inside the industry itself about the speed at which increasingly powerful models are being released, concerns that have reportedly grown "existential" for some researchers at the companies building the technology.

The response from President Trump was blunt. In a series of social media posts, he dismissed warnings of catastrophic AI risk as a "HOAX," arguing the U.S. has already done enough to guard against dangerous outcomes and that additional guardrails would only slow an important engine of economic growth. He also suggested, without offering evidence, that a coordinated effort exists to undermine the technology's progress.
