Nigerian senator claimed that monkey took 70 million naira meant for northern senator's forum
Looking back at one of Nigeria’s most astonishing political episodes, the disappearance of 70 million naira from the Northern Senators Forum was attributed to monkeys.
In February 2018 Senator Abdullahi Adamu was dismissed from his position as chairman of the group amid accusations of improper handling of the funds.
Yet the assertion that most astonished the public originated with another parliamentarian, Senator Shehu Sani, who informed journalists that the sum had supposedly been carried off by monkeys that had invaded a fellow senator’s rural residence.
Recognised for his frank manner of speaking, Sani presented the account as an unverified report he could not personally substantiate, employing it to ridicule a series of outlandish explanations offered for vanished government money.
He observed that the nation was “turning into a vast comedy,” reminding listeners of an earlier incident in which snakes were held responsible for consuming 36 million naira at a JAMB premises.
Adamu himself refused to address the claim, and the story of the currency-devouring monkeys entered the record as one of Nigeria’s most widely discussed controversies.
