Facts about brain aneurysms
* โA brain aneurysm occurs as a result of a weakened artery in the brain, which begins to balloon or bulge, consequently resulting in leakage of blood into the spaces within the brain, should a rupture occur.
* โBrain aneurysms kill approximately 500,000 people worldwide annually.
* โA brain aneurysm can occur at any age; however, the most common age bracket is 35 to 60 years.
* โWomen are more likely to develop a brain aneurysm than men. Medical research suggests a 3:2 ratio.
* โYou can have an unruptured brain aneurysm and live out your whole life with it. 1 in 50 people have an unruptured aneurysm. As long as it is small in size, chances are that it might not rupture. However, a brain aneurysm might grow overtime.
* There are no outward symptoms to indicate their existence in the brain, as long as the size remains negligible. However, large aneurysms come with specific symptoms.
* โLarge aneurysms can cause symptoms such as blurry vision, pain behind or above the eye, and localized aches around a specific region of the head.
* A ruptured brain aneurysm is a medical emergency. It presents with symptoms such as nausea/vomiting, a stiff neck, a 'thunderclap' headache (which is the worst headache of one's life), and loss of consciousness.
