*BACKGROUND TO BUILDING A STRONG FAMILY RELATIONSHIP*

*WEEK ONE*
Topic; *Background of Building a Strong Family Relationship*
*Text:* *Ephesians 2:22, 1 John 4:2-21*
*Memory Verse:* Can two walk together, except they be agreed? Amos 3:3
*Objectives*: At the end of this lesson, participants should be able to

1.Explain what Relationship, Family, and Strong Family Relationship mean.

2. Identify symptoms that hinder the building of strong family relationships.

*Introduction*
Family Relationship are divinely ordained and extend beyond mere biological ties. They are rooted in covenant, faith, and a shared commitment to Jesus Christ. Christian families are called to reflect God's love and character in their interactions and to be a light to the world. The Bible presents the family as a foundational unite of a society, designed by God to nurture live, values, and godly character.

*Main lesson*
*Definition of Terms*

*Relationship:* How two or or more people or groups behave toward and relate with one another.
*Family* A group consisting of parents and children, and sometimes close relative or others living together, bond by ties of marriage, blood , or adoption (Gen. 2:24; Eph. 6:4). Families are meant to reflect God's character and provide a nurturing environment for love and growth.
*Strong Family Relationship:* A deep, stable, and loving connection marked by understanding, respect, and shared faith in God.

*Key elements include*
i. Creation and Marriage: God established marriage as the foundation of family

ii. Love and Commitment: Husbands are to love their wives as Christ loved the church (Eph. 5:25)

iii. Parenting: Parents should raise their children in the Lord's discipline and instruction(Eph. 6:4)

i'v. Mutual Respect: All family relationships should reflect love, respect, and ommitment ( Col. 3:18-21)

*Symptoms contrary to building a strong family relationship*

i. *Poor communication:* This is when there is a communication gap among family members

ii. *Lack of respect:* This signifies a lack of regard, esteem, or courtesy towards someone or something, especially towards family members

iii. *Inequality among family members* Family members of the same position aren't treated equally

iv. *Absence of freedom or independence*. This is a state where individual lack autonomy and is subject to external control, restrictions, or limitation on their actions and choices.

v. *Lack of affection:* Not showing love or appreciation.

vi. *Perfectionism* (unrealistic expectations ) Not allowing people to make mistakes, and not a meet expectations at times.

vii. *Neglect of responsibility* when a caregiver, such as a parent, fail to take care of other people or refused to take charge of his/her responsibilities.

*Conclusion* Our family's origin greatly shapes our early relationships and interaction patternd. As we grow, we must align our family lives with God's design, cultivating love, mutual respect, and understanding for lasting bonds.
