Before you write off a customer as "just not wanting to pay," it's worth understanding why payments actually get delayed.

In our experience working with businesses on debt recovery tips, most late payments come down to four things: forgetfulness, cash-flow pressure on their own end, testing your follow-up discipline, or simple confusion about the balance owed.

Only one of those is a genuine problem customer. The rest are things a clear repayment structure and consistent follow-up can solve.

Know which one you're dealing with before you decide how to respond.

Save this for later.

Have you ever given a customer credit… just because you didn't want to lose them?

Almost every business owner has extended credit because saying no felt like losing the customer entirely. It's not a mistake. Selling on credit is a normal part of doing business. The real issue is when your "yes" isn't backed by any system and there isn't an agreed amount, date and record of what's actually owed.

Sometimes it works out. Sometimes "tomorrow" becomes a balance you've lost track of.

Have you ever said yes to a customer you weren't fully sure about? Tell us in the comments 👇

Following up can be tricky, especially when you’re trying to maintain a good relationship with your customers.

But there are a few mistakes that can make the process even harder.

Always be clear about what you’re following up on, don’t wait too long before reaching out, and try to agree on a specific payment date.

The goal isn’t just to follow up. It’s to make sure the conversation actually moves the payment forward.

What’s one follow-up mistake you’ve made before?

Don't write off that debt yet.

Often, the difference between "This customer will never pay" and actually recovering your money is having a proper follow up process for following up.

Credit isn’t the problem. The lack of structure is.

What hurts businesses is selling on credit without a system.

More than 50% of businesses don't have a clear process for deciding who qualifies for credit, setting payment terms, following up on payments, or recovering overdue debts. That's where the losses come from.

The issue isn't credit itself. It's the absence of structure.
