The Supreme Court’s latest judgment on political party membership registers and candidate nominations has triggered fresh controversy over the 2027 Rivers State governorship ticket of APC candidate, Hon. Kingsley Chinda.

The apex court on Thursday, September 24, 2026, restored Sections 77(5), 77(6), 77(7) and 84(2) of the Electoral Act 2026, affirming provisions concerning party membership registers and the nomination of candidates.

Questions are now being raised over Chinda’s eligibility because the APC submitted its timetable for the Rivers governorship primary to INEC on April 20, 2026, while the APC primary was held on May 21, 2026.

Reports state that Chinda’s defection from the PDP to the APC was formally announced on the floor of the House of Representatives on June 2, 2026. Some legal commentators therefore argue that his membership status at the time of the APC primary could come under scrutiny under the restored provisions of Section 77.

However, the Rivers State APC has rejected reports that Chinda has been disqualified, insisting that the Supreme Court judgment does not invalidate his candidacy.

With the legal interpretations now differing, the big question is:
