The Emir of Lapai and Chairman, Lapai Emirate Council, His Royal Highness Alhaji Umaru Bago Tafida III, FNSE, FNICE, CON, has expressed condolences to the Niger State Government and the families of 37 suspected illegal miners who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna.

The condolence was conveyed in a statement signed by the Secretary of the Lapai Emirate Council, Amb. Umar A. Ibrahim.

The Emir described the reported deaths as saddening and extended his sympathy to the families of the deceased, as well as the Niger State Government and people of the state.

He also appealed for calm, particularly among youths, urging them to refrain from actions capable of escalating tensions or disrupting public peace in the state.

According to the statement, the Emir called on the youths to “sheath their swords” and allow the departed to rest in peace while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths continue.

He prayed for the forgiveness of the deceased and asked Allah to grant them Jannatul Firdausi and give their families the strength to bear the loss.

The condolence comes amid ongoing attention to the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the miners in NSCDC custody in Minna.

Niger Government Imposes 24-Hour Curfew on Minna Amid Unrest Over 37 Deaths in NSCDC Custody

The restriction takes effect immediately after Friday’s Juma’at prayer as authorities move to contain unrest following the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in detention.

The Niger State Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Minna, the state capital, following unrest triggered by the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The curfew takes effect immediately after Friday’s Juma’at prayer, with residents expected to remain indoors during the restriction.

The development follows protests and clashes reported in Minna on Friday after news of the deaths generated public anger and concern. Security forces were deployed as authorities moved to restore order.

The 37 deceased were among scores of people arrested during NSCDC enforcement operations against suspected illegal mining activities in the M.I. Wushishi/Lukoto area of Minna on September 15 and 16, 2026. They were reportedly found dead at an NSCDC detention facility in the early hours of September 17.

The NSCDC initially described the deaths as following a suspected disease outbreak but said the actual cause had not been conclusively established. The bodies were deposited at the General Hospital, Minna, for medical examination.

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has confirmed the death of 37 detainees and said investigations, including forensic and medical examinations, are being conducted to establish the cause of the deaths. The Federal Government has also suspended the Niger State NSCDC Commandant, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, pending a full investigation.

The police have separately commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths, while the NSCDC has constituted an investigative team to examine the condition of the detainees before and during their detention, including the conditions of custody and medical attention provided.

The Presidency has initiated an urgent intervention to address the prolonged traffic gridlock along the Bida–Kutigi corridor in Niger State, following a directive by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for immediate measures to restore traffic flow.

The intervention is being coordinated by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Transportation and Mobility, Prince Adetokunbo Ademola Ade-John, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Ade-John held discussions with FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, Minister of State for Works Bello Muhammad Goronyo, and the National President of the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), Yusuf Lawal, to consider measures for improving traffic management and addressing the causes of the recurring congestion.

One of the major congestion points identified is the Wuya Bridge between Bida and Kutigi, where traffic is reportedly more difficult on Wednesdays because of increased vehicular activity associated with the weekly market.

The Federal Government has suspended the Niger State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, following the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in custody in Minna, Niger State.

The suspension was ordered by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Friday, September 18, 2026, alongside a directive for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

According to a statement issued by the minister’s Senior Assistant on Media and Publicity, Babatunde Alao, the deaths occurred after NSCDC enforcement operations conducted around the M.I. Wushishi/Lukoto axis of Minna on September 15 and 16.

The NSCDC had earlier confirmed that some of the suspects arrested during the operations were found dead in custody in the early hours of September 17. The Corps initially attributed the deaths to a suspected disease outbreak, but said the actual cause had not been established.

A 400-level Public Administration student of **Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai), Ismail Ishaq Magaji, has reportedly been killed by a bullet during an incident in Wawa, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

The report was contained in a statement by Senator Isah Mokwa, who alleged that Magaji was struck by a bullet during sporadic shooting involving military personnel amid a reported land dispute in the community.
