Standing before my students as their lecturer and Chief Judge at the prestigious Olabisi Onabanjo University; The Ogun State University yesterday was a deeply emotional and fulfilling experience for me.
Receiving this Certificate of Recognition from the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineering Studentsโ Affiliate (NICE-SA) is more than an award; it is a reminder of how far God has brought me through grace, dedication, growth, and service to the engineering profession.
I had the honour of moderating and serving as Chief Judge during the departmental debate competition themed:
โShould Nigeria Mandate that all New Buildings use Local Materials and Traditional Construction Methods to Prevent Collapse Rather than Importing Foreign Standards and Materials.โ
To stand before my students, guide intellectual discussions, and contribute to shaping young engineering minds brought me great joy, humility, and gratitude to God Almighty. The respect, brilliance, confidence, and critical thinking displayed by the students made the experience truly memorable and rewarding.
As engineers, we are not only builders of structures; we are also builders of minds, values, leadership, and national development. Moments like this remind me that true impact goes beyond construction sites and design offices; it also lies in mentoring, inspiring, and preparing the next generation for the future ahead.
I sincerely appreciate the leadership of NICE-SA, the Department of Civil Engineering, and the entire university community for the recognition, honour, and warm reception extended to me.
I remain grateful to God for the grace to grow, serve, teach, and continue contributing meaningfully to the engineering profession and academic community.
The journey continues.
Engr. Opeyemi Sunday OLABISI, MNSE
At the core of innovation and resilience is the construction of a sheet pile using the water injection method. This technique was deliberately chosen over the hammering method to provide enhanced protection for our major project while eliminating unnecessary vibrations that could impact the integrity of our existing structures.
The decision to adopt this method became critical when the ocean tide breached our 3-meter-high raft fence. By leveraging the water injection method, we implemented a more adaptive and efficient solution that addressed environmental threats and ensured the long-term structural stability of the project.
This approach underscores the importance of critical thinking, the adoption of alternative methods, and a commitment to sustainable, long-term success in engineering and construction.
Every project comes with its unique challenges, but it is our ability to adapt and innovate that defines our expertise and dedication to delivering excellence under pressure.
