My neighbour gave my food almost every day.

But the one day I decided to give her child food too...

She made her child return it to me.

I stood there holding that plate, wondering:

"What exactly did I do to this woman?"

I didn't fight her.

I didn't insult her.

I simply walked away.

For three days, I kept thinking about what happened.

Then I called her.

I said calmly.

Aunty,I appreciate everything you've done for my children. But please, I would like you to stop giving them food every day. They will soon start school, and I don't want them to become comfortable collecting food from people's houses."

I thought i had spoken respectfully.

But apparently, she saw it differently.

She went straight to my husband.

And when my husband came home, he confronted me.

" Why are you stopping this woman from feeding our children!"

I explained everything.

But he wouldn't listen.

Instead, he said.

" Do you think you're the only person who can train children? It takes more than one person to raise a child."

I was shocked.

I said.

"I'm not saying nobody should help me. I'm only saying i don't want my children to depend on food from neighbours."

He continued arguing.

Finally, i became frustrated and said:

"Please, stop advising me about this. This is my decision as their mother."

Then everything changed.

He hit me.

I fell silent.

That night, i cried alone.

Not because of the neighbour anymore.

Not even because of the food.

I cried because my own husband had chosen a misunderstanding over my feelings.

A few weeks later, something unexpected happened.

My neighbour's husband lost his job.

Suddenly, things became difficult in their house.

The same woman who used to give my children food every day could no longer afford to cook enough food for her own family.

One evening, her child came to my compound.

The child stood quietly near my children while they were eating.

I knew exactly what the child wanted.

My neighbour was embarrassed.

Then she turned away.

I called her child.

"Come and eat."

The child sat down.

I served the child full plate.

My neighbour couldn't believe what she was seeing.

She walked toward me with tears in her eyes.

She said:

After what happened between us... You're still feeding my child?"

I looked at her and said:

"Your child didn't offend me."

She began crying.

Then she said the words I never expected to hear:

I was wrong. I should never have made my child return your food."

But that was the end.

She went to my husband and told him:

"Your wife wasn't trying to disrespect me. She was only trying to teach her children independence. I misunderstood her."

My husband became quiet.

Then he came to me.

For the first time, he realized how badly the situation had escalated.

He apologized for allowing a small disagreement to come between us -and for hurting me.

I accepted his apology, but I told him:

"Disagreement should never become violence."

And my neighbour and I eventually settled our differences.

The woman who once refused food from my hand eventually had to watch me feed her child.

But I didn't do it to humiliate her.

I did it because I refused to let someone else's actions turn me into a bitter person.

That day I learned something.

Karma doesn't always mean watching someone suffer.

Sometimes karma is when the person you tried to embarrass becomes the person who shows you kindness when you need it most.
