During recent work in Ukraine and conversations with humanitarian organizations operating in high-risk environments, one topic keeps returning: drones. From Ukraine to Sudan and beyond, the widespread use of drones is creating new challenges for humanitarian access, staff safety, acceptance, and security risk management.
The question is no longer whether drones will affect humanitarian operations, but whether we are adapting quickly enough.
In our latest blog, we explore how drone warfare is reshaping the humanitarian landscape and what NGOs can do to better prepare for this evolving threat.

Drone warfare and humanitarian operations. Are we keeping up? - Global Risk Advice Drones are reshaping conflict and humanitarian risk. How aid organizations must adapt security, risk thresholds, and operations. Are we keeping up?
Ukraine continues to face enormous humanitarian and security challenges. During our recent visit, we had the privilege of supporting humanitarian efforts and advising NGOs on how to manage risks and operate safely in an evolving conflict environment.
Travelling through areas such as Kherson Oblast, the scale of destruction is immediately apparent. But so too is the commitment to recovery.
The demining activities shown in this video are a powerful example. Before reconstruction can take place, land must first be made safe. Each cleared field and each removed explosive hazard brings communities one step closer to rebuilding their future.
Recovery is a long process, but it is already underway.

Over the years, clients have regularly asked us to share our thoughts and experiences on topics related to security risk management, crisis management, and working in complex environments.
We've now taken the first step: short blogs to discuss these topics a bit more in depth.
Our first blog focuses on Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) and why realistic preparation helps humanitarian professionals operate more safely and confidently in challenging contexts.
More articles will follow in the coming months as we share lessons, practical insights, and perspectives from the field.
Read it here:
HEAT Training for Humanitarian Professionals - Global Risk Advice Learn how HEAT training helps humanitarian professionals stay safe, prepared, and effective in high-risk and unstable environments worldwide.

We know all too well how drones are used in conflict and violence.
Today, on International Drone Day, we also appreciate their positive, functional, and even inspiring applications: to transport lifesaving medicines quickly between cities, to inspect high places, to train, and to see the world from a different angle.
This is our training location at Klooster Nieuw Sion, seen from above. Where we train NGO staff how to deal with drones in conflict zones but also secretly enjoy the magnificent views from our drones.
