St. Eustatius Afrikan Burial Ground Alliance Presents The Awakening of a new historical narrative. (Documentary)

02/08/2026

Word of thanks from Kenneth Cuvalay, the Alliance's President

Good day everyone,

First and foremost, I would like to express my thanks and appreciation to our collaborated NGOs and organizations: Statia Cultural Heritage Implementation Committee (SCHIC), Statia Roots Festival, St. Eustatius Historical Foundation, St. Eustatius Monuments Foundation, Statia Tourism Foundation, the local government of St. Eustatius, the members of the Island Council of St. Eustatius, the Slavery Memorial Committee Curaçao, and a special word of thanks to Ms. Fleming, Executive Assistant Public Entity and Mr. Taro Merkman Griffin Gardner, chairman of foundation, Statia Roots Festival for their exceptional cooperation on behalf of the members of the Alliance.

Also a very special thank you to our speakers: Dr. Kimani Nehusi, Dr. Artwell Cain, Ms. Nathalie Nede, Drs. Xiomara Balentina, Papa Umpo (Mr. Garfield Young) and Mr. Marvin Hokstam Baapoure

But above all, as President of the St. Eustatius Afrikan Burial Ground Alliance, I wish to express my thanks and appreciation in its entirety to the community of St. Eustatius for their attendance and proactive contributions on July 1, when we pause to reflect on and honor our ancestors for the enormous sacrifices they made without fear during the resistance against the barbaric crimes of slavery and oppression, so that we can now enjoy freedom.

This year, July 1st was primarily dedicated to commemoration, with an emphasis on an Afrikan-Caribbean perspective. This perspective strives for more Afrikan-Centered education and awareness, and aims to empower the marginalized Afrikan community by drawing attention to, for example, the marginalization, neglect, and undignified practices regarding their cultural heritage.

The awakening of this is primarily achieved through community engagement using a holistic approach, connecting with their ancestral history, philosophy, spiritual beliefs, and traditions. It also examines how these insights are relevant to the current Afrikan community and their cultural identity in light of contemporary experiences and the ongoing traumas passed down from generation to generation, while the practices of colonization remain widespread/prevalent, making the decolonizing process necessary.

What we also saw while visiting our ancestors' sacred paths/burial grounds, accompanied by substantive historical explanations, was that young Afrikan descendants in particular were very shocked that they had never learned anything at school regarding the historical role their ancestors played in the fight against slavery and against the trafficking of enslaved Afrikans, and that absolutely nothing significant had been said about their Afrikan ancestors.

A second observation is that within the Afrikan community there is a great need to know more about their ancestors and to connect with Motherland Afrika. The Alliance will continue to focus and dedicate itself even more to strengthening historical ancestral education in collaboration with the community and all other stakeholders within the societal chain.

The Caribbean's Hidden Paradise

On June 21st, 2016, I returned home from The Netherlands to St. Eustatius Dutch Caribbean with a vision, a passion for enterpreneurship, and the determination to build something of my own. That day marked the beginning of TwichStudio.

Now, on June 21st, 2026, I proudly celebrate 10 years in business.

The journey wasn’t easy. Starting from the ground up came with challenges, long nights, financial sacrifices, self doubt, slow seasons, and learning how to turn creativity into a sustainable business. There were moments when investing in equipment felt impossible and moments where giving up would’ve been easier.

But through consistency, hard work, faith, and the support of amazing clients, friends, and family, TwichStudio continued to grow.

I also want to give a special thank you to Mega D Humphreys founder of Mega D Youth Foundation - MYF for pointing me in the right direction from the very beginning, recommending the camera equipment and editing software I needed to get started, and inviting me to attend trainings and workshops that helped shape my journey. Those experiences, including learning from actors and directors overseas, gave me valuable knowledge, inspiration, and confidence to pursue this path professionally.

I also want to extend a special thank you to Twizzle from Darkside Muzik for the opportunity to direct several of his music videos over the years. These productions reached hundreds of thousands of viewers online through his music releases, including his latest single, “Born Again.” I truly appreciate the trust, collaboration, and creative opportunities that contributed to my growth and experience as a director and visual creator.

Over the years, networking and building connections through media outlets also opened unexpected doors. In 2021, I was featured in 36 Google News articles, including features published by the CaliforniaHerald, LondonDailyPost, FabWorldToday, BigTimeDaily and among others which helped expand my reach internationally and created opportunities beyond TwichStudio through new business connections, collaborations, and online investments.

Today, I look at over $16,000 plus worth of equipment not just as gear, but as proof of perseverance, dedication, and years of believing in the dream. Every camera, lens, light, and accessory tells part of the story.

From videography to photography, from small projects to major moments captured over the years, I’m grateful for every opportunity and every person who trusted me to bring their vision to life.

10 years later, the passion is still alive, the vision is still growing, and the journey is far from over.

Thank you to everyone who has supported TwichStudio throughout the years. This milestone belongs to all of us.
