After the law passed in Türkiye in 2024, thousands of street animals were rounded up. In Ankara, the official number announced was 52,000 dogs collected, while shelter capacity was only around 13,000.

They were told that the remaining dogs died of “natural causes.” But the reality we witnessed was very different: dogs who had lived peacefully in neighborhoods for years died from poison injections, suffered heart attacks during capture, contracted diseases in shelters, starved and dehydrated, fought each other to survive, were hit by cars while trying to escape, and died slowly in pain.

As both shelter volunteers and rescuers working in the field for dogs who still have not been captured, we can protect only a small number of them with the limited financial and emotional resources we have.🤷🏻‍♀️

The biggest obstacle is the lack of foster and forever homes. Because of this, we are unable to pay for the rabies titer tests required for international adoption and cannot start the process for many dogs who already have a chance to live.😞

Every animal whose process begins and who reaches a home abroad also creates space for another animal that is still waiting to die.✨🤞🏼

He was abandoned at a shelter with his sibling. Sadly, his sibling didn’t survive. We rescued Dia, completed his veterinary care, and he’s now safe in a foster home.😌🙌🏻

Because there are so many dogs waiting for help, it’s difficult for us to cover the cost of every rabies antibody titer test. That’s why we haven’t been able to start Lily’s titer process yet.😞
