When a Penguin met an Egg, 326 million light-years away. 🐧🥚

This is not art. This is Arp 142 — two galaxies locked in a cosmic dance.

On the left is Hubble's view from 2013, in visible light. On the right is Webb's view from May 6, 2024, in near-infrared. Same place, two completely different universes.

The distorted spiral on the right is NGC 2936, the Penguin. Its beak, head, and body were torn apart when it flew too close to its companion. That beak? It's not a beak. It's a massive burst of newborn blue stars, triggered by gravity.

The compact glow on the left is NGC 2937, the Egg. A smooth elliptical galaxy that looks innocent, but its gravity is the reason the Penguin looks this way. It survived mostly unchanged, but not innocent.

They are in the constellation Hydra, 326 million light-years away. What you are seeing happened 326 million years ago. The interaction started 25 to 75 million years before that moment.

And look closer at the top right — that edge-on line is a third galaxy, PGC 1237172, silently watching the collision.

Two telescopes. 11 years apart. One story of destruction and birth.
