A closer look at the sprung metering wheel on the Aitchison GrassFarmer seed drill, and why it matters for consistent, accurate direct drilling.
This metering wheel drives the seed drill gearbox, which rotates the foam pads and meters seed down the tubes into the ground. Because it's sprung and not locked to a depth wheel, it follows ground contour and stays in positive contact with the ground at all times.
Being a mechanical ground drive, the gearbox gets an accurate, consistent drive straight off the wheel. It's simple, reliable, and there’s nothing complicated to go wrong.

When you're direct drilling with a disc drill, one of the major benefits is that your seed gets planted with minimal disturbance to the seedbed around it.

It was some pretty muddy, slippery conditions, but the tidy little unit was ticking along nicely and did a mint job of planting the winter oats.
They say the proof is in the pudding. In October 2025, we partnered with NZ YouTuber Hill Country Farmer in the Rangitikei District (NZ) to plant a Swede crop with a GrassFarmer seed drill.
