We’ve seen how overwhelming separation can be legally, emotionally and financially.
That’s why we created The Clean Break Roadmap: a free, plain-language guide that walks you through each stage of the process using our B.R.E.A.K.S. framework.
Inside, you’ll find checklists, flowcharts, and practical advice to help you move from confusion to confidence.
It's the first guide of its kind from a law firm in New Zealand and we’re so proud to share it with you.

A friend of Sarah’s turned our values into cross stitch!
This is proof they’re stitched into everything we do (literally).

Telling people you’ve separated can feel harder than the separation itself.
If you’re dreading the questions.... “What happened?” or “Are you okay?”... try preparing a short divorce elevator speech:
💬“We’ve decided to separate amicably and are focused on what’s best for the kids.”
💬 “We’ve gone our separate ways and are working through things respectfully.”
Then let people know what YOU need - a little space, a listening ear, or help with practical things.
And if someone slips into gossip or judgment, it’s okay to say: “I’m not ready to talk about that right now.”
You get to choose what (and how much) you share 💛
When life feels overwhelming, it's easy to think you just need to "push through."
But stress, grief, separation, uncertainty, and big life changes don't just affect your mind. They affect your nervous system too.
Here are 8 simple tools we often recommend when clients tell us, "I feel all over the place":
1. Breathe slower than you think you need to.
Exhale longer than you inhale. This signals to your brain that you’re not in danger.
2. Get present through your senses.
Touch something textured, smell something familiar, feel your feet on the ground, say five things you can see right now.
3. Take a walk around the block — or just the room.
Movement doesn’t need to be intense to be effective.
4. Create a “safe place” image.
Picture a location (real or imagined) where you feel calm, and visit it in your mind when overwhelmed.
5. Use cold water.
Splash your face or run cold water over your wrists — this can signal your body to reset and reduce emotional intensity.
6. Hum, sigh, or sing.
Your voice can stimulate the vagus nerve, which helps your body relax.
7. Tense and release.
Try progressive muscle relaxation: clench a body part for 5 seconds, then release. Move through different areas.
8. Repeat a calming phrase.
Something like, “This feeling won’t last forever,” or “Right now, I’m safe.” Repetition helps settle the mind.
They're quick, practical, and designed to help you move from fight, flight, or freeze back to a place where you can think clearly and make decisions with confidence.
Which one are you going to try first? 💛

Who controls the trust? Trust deeds often give certain people powerful rights, like:
• appointing or removing trustees
• deciding who benefits
• controlling distributions
In rare cases, those powers can be so strong that the law treats them almost like ownership.
But most of the time, they don’t.
Whether trust powers matter depends heavily on the wording of the trust deed and how the trust actually operates.
Which is why two trusts that look similar on the surface can lead to completely different outcomes at separation.
If a trust is involved in your relationship, understanding who really controls it can make a big difference.

Did you know that YOUR house can legally become OUR house without you even realising?
In New Zealand, the family home is treated differently under relationship property law. Even if you bought the house years before your relationship began, once it becomes the home you share together, it will be considered relationship property.
That means it may be divided 50/50 if you separate, unless you have a valid contracting out agreement in place.
So if you want YOUR house to stay YOUR house, get in touch with us to talk about your options and how to get protection in place.
