Grey Street has been at the heart of Hamilton East for more than 150 years.
Hamilton East was established as a military settlement in 1864 and became known as ‘Irishtown’, reflecting the large number of Irish militiamen who settled in the area. Grey Street was originally intended to become Hamilton’s main street, with Steele Park established as a focal point for the growing community.
The street was named after Governor George Grey, whose legacy in Aotearoa remains controversial due to his role in the invasion of Waikato and the subsequent confiscation of Māori land.
Grey Street went on to become an important commercial centre for Hamilton East, with landmarks including the Royal Hotel, which opened in 1865 and stood on the corner of Grey and Wellington streets until it was demolished in 1971.
Today, the street is once again a lively part of Hamilton, lined with cafés, restaurants, shops and creative spaces, including MADE, bringing together old and new as one of the city’s favourite neighbourhood streets.
