🏉 Rugby is roaring back into Wellington with the Lions’ NPC season opener

The Wellington Lions are back at Hnry Stadium kicking off their season against the Hawke's Bay Magpies on Sunday 2 August, with a 5.05pm kick-off.

Back the Lions and let us do the driving – here's how to get to and from the game:

🚆 Trains are running on the Kāpiti and Johnsonville Lines.

🚌 Buses will replace trains on the Hutt Valley line during the day. Train services will resume from Wellington Station to the Hutt Valley at 6.05pm, and from the Hutt Valley to Wellington at 6.30pm, allowing customers to travel home by train after the game.

⛴️ Ferries are running on a standard weekend timetable.

⏰ Normal weekend timetables apply across the network, so we recommend travelling early and allowing extra time for your journey.

💳 Standard off-peak weekend fares apply. You can pay using a Snapper card or contactless Visa and Mastercard payments.

♿Come along and meet the Metlink team at the 'What’s Outside the Box' Expo 2026 on Thursday 13 August, from 10.00am–2.00pm at Ākau Tangi Sports Centre, Kilbirnie. The expo is about exploring the possibilities of what comes next in the journey after secondary school.

The All Blacks return to the capital for an international clash against Italy on Saturday 11 July, kicking off at 5:10pm at Hnry Stadium - don’t miss the action. 🏉

Let us do the driving – here’s how to get to and from the game:

🚆Trains are running on the Hutt Valley, Kapiti and Johnsonville Lines with extra capacity before the game and extra services after the game.

The Wairarapa Line 6:55pm service will depart at 7:20pm to support passengers to travel home from the All Blacks game.

🚌 Buses are running after the game with extra capacity.

⛴️ Ferries are running on a weekend timetable. On game day, the harbour ferry has scheduled an extra sailing from Queens Wharf at about 7.30pm to take fans home. Bookings are required on the East by West website.

Ride with us to the game - your ticket is all you need to board Metlink Services on Saturday. Please show your event ticket when travelling on buses or trains. This does not include Airport Express buses, harbour ferry services and Te Hunga Whaikaha Total Mobility taxis.

✨ Matariki Long Weekend Services

There’s lots happening this Matariki weekend! Whether you're heading to a celebration, the All Blacks game, or visiting whānau, here’s what you need to know to help you plan ahead:

🚆 Trains will run to a Sunday timetable on Friday 10 July (Matariki Day) and to the normal timetable on Saturday 11 July, with extra capacity before the All Blacks game and extra services afterwards.

The Wairarapa Line 6:55pm service will depart at 7:20pm to support passengers to travel home from the All Blacks game.

🚌 On Sunday 12 July, rail works are planned, with buses replacing trains on the following lines:
• Hutt Valley Line – all day.
• Kāpiti Line (between Wellington and Porirua) - evening only, from 7:44pm.
• Johnsonville Line – evening only, from 7:30pm.
• Wairarapa Line will be bus replaced from the Hutt Valley – all day.

Please check the timetable before you travel and allow extra time for your journey.

Here's a behind-the-scenes look as Tūhono - the new trains for the lower North Island - begins to take shape.
Tūhono will deliver modern, lower-emission trains for the Wairarapa Line and replace the Capital Connection service between Palmerston North and Wellington. It’s a big step forward for comfort, reliability and accessibility across the network.
Right now, the focus is on the driver cab. We’re working alongside drivers and train managers to test and refine layout, visibility and ergonomics, making sure the design supports safe, smooth journeys every day.
Getting these details right early matters - for the people running the service and the customers who rely on it.
