🌍💚 Christ the Redeemer just turned green — and it's a big deal.

On August 21, 2026, the Christ the Redeemer Sanctuary Santuário Cristo Redentor in Rio de Janeiro signed a Climate Certification Agreement with GI International, kicking off a journey to measure, reduce, and offset the emissions linked to one of the most visited monuments on the planet. The plan runs through 2028, with the Sanctuary aiming for Climate Positive or Carbon Neutral certification along the way.

The initiative aligns with the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism, launched at COP26 and led by UN Tourism together with UNEP — proof that even the world's most iconic landmarks are taking real steps for the climate. 🙌

An avoidance credit prevents a future emission. It doesn't touch the carbon already in the air.

That distinction used to be a footnote. The market now prices it at 3 to 100x.

In 24 months the ICVCM's CCP label went from 27M to 108M credits. Biochar accounts for roughly 90% of the durable removals actually delivered — not contracted, delivered.

Which means a climate positive strategy claim can only rest on removals. Under our own certification standard: verified removals of at least 130% of baseline emissions, stored for more than 100 years, third-party audited.

Not a prevented emission. An extracted one.

A plantation of a single fast-growing species stores carbon that carries a risk most sustainability reports never price: the risk of not staying there. One fire, one pest outbreak, one drought, and the removal reverses — while the fossil emission it was meant to offset is permanent.

That's why removals claimed from ecologically degraded or low-diversity systems are not considered durable or credible under Section D of our Climate-Positive Certification Standard. Native, multi-species composition is mandatory.
