Father Rector reflects on the Gospel [Matthew 20.1-16] this Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A. He mentioned: “The first thing this Gospel reminds us of is that 𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐬…it is never too late to respond to God's invitation.”

“Second, 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞. 𝐖𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐧. Whether someone comes to faith as a child and faithfully serves God for decades, or someone turns back to God late in life with sincere repentance, the gift remains God's gift…𝐆𝐨𝐝'𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞.”

Peter came and said to Jesus, "Lord, how often should I forgive my brother or sister if they sin against me? As many as seven times?" Jesus said to him, "Not seven times, but, I tell you seventy-seven times." (Matthew 18.21-22)

Father Rector reflects on the Gospel [Matthew 18.21-35] this Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A. He mentioned: “In Jesus' response to Peter’s question, Jesus is not asking Peter to keep a record and forgive exactly seventy-seven times. Rather, Jesus is saying that 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐧𝐨 𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭…”

“The parable we heard in the Gospel gives us several 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬: (1) 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬. Christian forgiveness is about developing a heart that continually chooses mercy. (2) 𝐖𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐲. The mercy we received from God is not meant to stop with us. It is meant to flow through us to others. (3) 𝐉𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐮𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭. To forgive from the heart means that we sincerely desire the good of the person who has hurt us.”

He mentioned: “𝐉𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐬 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝, 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲, 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐭 𝐚𝐬 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬… The first instruction of Jesus: 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮. 𝐒𝐢𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧. 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐤. 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧. And there is something very important here that we sometimes forget. Jesus says 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽.”

“Go. Sit. Talk. Listen. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻…Even when reconciliation seems impossible, do not turn the other person into an enemy…”

“𝗝𝗲𝘀𝘂𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Disciples of Jesus are called to be people of dialogue, people of mercy, and people of reconciliation.”

“Salvation for everyone—salvation for all—is the goal of dialogue, forgiveness, and reconciliation…”
