Have you ever noticed that people use different expressions when referring to our denomination? Some say, โ€œChurch of the Nazarene.โ€ Others simply say, โ€œNazarene Church.โ€ Still others say, โ€œI am a Nazarene.โ€ Are these expressions the same? Is one more correct than the other? And why does the name matter at all?

At first, this may seem like a small question about words. But a name often carries history, identity, theology, and mission. For Nazarenes, our name should ultimately point us to one Person: Jesus Christ.

The official denominational name is This is the name by which the denomination is formally known around the world and is the proper name to use in official documents, publications, certificates, programs, church communication, and denominational references. It identifies a particular Christian denomination with its own history, theological heritage, organizational structure, and worldwide mission.

The expression โ€œ๐—ก๐—ฎ๐˜‡๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐—–๐—ต๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฐ๐—ตโ€ is commonly used in ordinary conversation and is generally understood as a shortened way of referring to a congregation of the Church of the Nazarene. Saying it informally is not necessarily wrong. The important distinction is that Church of the Nazarene is the official denominational name, while Nazarene Church is usually a descriptive or conversational expression.

This distinction should not become a source of unnecessary argument. Precision is important, especially in formal settings, but our greater concern should be understanding what the name represents.

The word ๐—ก๐—ฎ๐˜‡๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฒ takes us directly to Jesus. Jesus was raised in Nazareth and was frequently identified in the New Testament as ๐—๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜‚๐˜€ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ก๐—ฎ๐˜‡๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ต or ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ก๐—ฎ๐˜‡๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฒ.

Peter spoke of โ€œJesus of Nazarethโ€ in Acts 2:22, and later referred to โ€œJesus Christ of Nazarethโ€ in Acts 4:10. When Saul encountered the risen Christ, Jesus identified Himself by saying, โ€œI am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecutingโ€ (Acts 22:8 ESV). Matthew also connects Jesus with Nazareth when he writes that He โ€œlived in a city called Nazarethโ€ and โ€œwould be called a Nazareneโ€ (Matthew 2:23 ESV).

The word Nazarene therefore existed long before our denomination. The Church of the Nazarene did not invent the term. Its biblical roots point first to Jesus of Nazareth.

That gives our name a deeper meaning. When we hear the word Nazarene, our first thought should not merely be an organization, church building, logo, or denomination. It should remind us of

Today, when someone says, โ€œI am a Nazarene,โ€ the statement usually means that the person is a member of or is connected with the Church of the Nazarene. But the word itself is bigger than a modern denominational label.

Acts 24:5 records Paul's accusers describing him as a leader of โ€œthe sect of the Nazarenes.โ€ Whatever the hostile intention behind that accusation, it shows that the term had already been associated with followers of Jesus in the early Christian period.

For us today, saying โ€œI am a Nazareneโ€ should therefore mean more than identifying the denomination we attend. It should remind us that our identity is ultimately rooted in Christ. Denominational identity is valuable, but it must never replace Christian identity.

We are Nazarenes because we belong to a Christian tradition that points us toward Jesus of Nazareth. The name should therefore call us not merely to identify ourselves with a church, but to live as genuine disciples of Christ.

We often focus on the word Nazarene, but the word Church is equally important. The Church of the Nazarene is not merely an institution, organization, or collection of buildings. It is part of the larger Christian Church โ€” the worldwide body of believers who confess Jesus Christ as Lord.

The New Testament uses the Greek word ๐‘’๐‘˜๐‘˜๐‘™๐‘’๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘Ž, commonly translated as โ€œchurch,โ€ to speak of an assembly or gathering. The biblical church is therefore fundamentally about ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฒ, not buildings. A church building may be where believers gather, but the church itself is the community of God's people.

Paul writes, โ€œNow you are the body of Christ and individually members of itโ€ (1 Corinthians 12:27 ESV). This reminds us that the Church of the Nazarene is part of the broader body of Christ. We do not claim that Nazarenes alone make up the entire Christian Church. Rather, we understand ourselves as one Christian denomination within the wider fellowship of believers.

Our denominational identity should therefore strengthen our commitment to Christ while also cultivating humility and respect toward other Christians.

The Church of the Nazarene belongs to the One of the central themes of this tradition is the transforming grace of God and the biblical call to holy living.

Nazarenes understand salvation as the gracious work of God from beginning to end. We speak of ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ, God's grace that goes before us and enables us to respond to Him; ๐—ท๐˜‚๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—ณ๐˜†๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ, through which sinners are forgiven and reconciled to God by faith in Jesus Christ; and ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ณ๐˜†๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ, through which God continues His transforming work in the believer.

The Church of the Nazarene also gives particular emphasis to This teaching does not mean that believers become incapable of mistakes, weakness, or further growth. Rather, it speaks of a deeper work of grace in which believers surrender themselves wholly to God and are empowered to love Him and others with an undivided heart.

Holiness, therefore, is much more than a list of things we should not do. Biblical holiness is about becoming increasingly Christlike. It affects our motives, relationships, speech, conduct, compassion, priorities, and daily decisions. The Nazarene emphasis on holiness reminds us that God's grace does not merely forgive us; it also transforms us.

It is possible to have the right denominational name and still fail to live according to what that name represents. A person may proudly say, โ€œI am a Nazarene,โ€ but merely carrying the label does not make a person holy.

Jesus said, โ€œYou will recognize them by their fruitsโ€ (Matthew 7:16 ESV). Christian identity is meant to become visible through the kind of life we live. If we call ourselves followers of Christ, our conduct should increasingly reflect Christ. If we identify ourselves as Nazarenes, our lives should demonstrate the holy love that our Wesleyan-Holiness tradition proclaims.

This means our name should function not only as an identity but also as a calling. The question is not simply, โ€œWhich church do I belong to?โ€ We must also ask, โ€œWhat kind of person is God's grace making me?โ€

Do our words show grace? Do we forgive? Do we demonstrate integrity? Do we care for people who are hurting? Do we show compassion to those who are often ignored? Do our relationships reflect the love of Christ?

The credibility of the name we carry is seen in the life we live.

Being Nazarene is both personal and communal. Personally, we follow Jesus Christ and seek to grow in grace and holiness. Communally, we belong to a worldwide people who worship, serve, make disciples, proclaim the gospel, and participate in God's mission together.

Holiness should never cause us to withdraw from the world or become self-righteous. True holiness moves us toward people. Love for God should produce love for neighbor. God's transforming grace should make us more compassionate, generous, forgiving, and willing to serve.

Jesus said, โ€œAs the Father has sent me, even so I am sending youโ€ (John 20:21 ESV). This reminds us that the church is a sent people. We receive grace so that we can also become instruments of grace in the world.

A Nazarene identity therefore includes both holiness and mission. We are called to become more like Christ and to participate in His mission by sharing the good news, making Christlike disciples, serving our communities, caring for those in need, and showing the love of God through both word and action.

When referring formally to the denomination, the proper name is Church of the Nazarene. This is the best form to use on church signs, official programs, certificates, publications, correspondence, reports, and other denominational materials.

In casual conversation, Nazarene Church may be used as a shortened expression when the meaning is clear. Someone may naturally say, โ€œOur Nazarene Church is having a fellowship tonight,โ€ and people will usually understand the reference.

A person may also say, โ€œI am a Nazarene.โ€ That is a natural way of describing one's denominational identity. But whenever we use that statement, we should remember that it carries more than an organizational meaning.

To say โ€œI am a Nazareneโ€ should remind us that we belong to a church whose name points toward Jesus of Nazareth, whose theology emphasizes holy love, and whose mission calls us to make Christlike disciples in the nations.

The issue, then, is not merely using the proper terminology. It is understanding what the terminology means.

So, what's in a name? Quite a lot.

Church of the Nazarene is our official denominational name. Nazarene Church is a commonly used informal expression. Nazarene identifies our denominational family and carries a biblical connection with Jesus of Nazareth.

But ultimately, a Christian name is meaningful only when our lives reflect the One to whom the name points.

We can place Church of the Nazarene on our buildings, documents, banners, websites, and social media pages. We can proudly tell people that we are Nazarenes. Yet the most important question is not whether people know the name of our denomination.

The deeper question is:

When people encounter us, do they see something of Jesus?

Jesus of Nazareth lived with humility, holiness, compassion, obedience, sacrifice, and love. If our name points to Him, then our lives should point to Him as well.

Therefore, we should never use our denominational identity as a reason for pride or superiority. Instead, the name Nazarene should call us back to the Christ we follow and the holy life to which He calls us.

A denominational name tells people who we are connected with.

A transformed life shows them Who we belong to.

THINK ABOUT IT

A name can tell us about our history, our theological heritage, and the Christian family to which we belong. But a name can never substitute for a transformed life.

The Church of the Nazarene carries a name connected with Jesus of Nazareth. So perhaps the most important question is not simply, โ€œAm I a Nazarene?โ€

The better question is:

โ€œDoes my life reflect the Jesus whose name I carry?โ€

Church of the Nazarene is our official denominational name. Nazarene Church is a commonly used informal expression. And Nazarene reminds us of Jesus of Nazareth and identifies our Wesleyan-Holiness Christian family.

But the deepest meaning of our name is not found on a church sign.

It is found in the lives of people who follow Jesus, pursue holiness, love others, and participate in His mission.

Jesus died. Jesus was buried. God raised Him from the dead. Jesus appeared to His followers.

1 Corinthians 15:3โ€“4 (ESV):
โ€œChrist died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day.โ€

1 Corinthians 15:5โ€“6 (ESV):
โ€œHe appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time.โ€

Ang 1 Corinthians 15 tradition ay itinuturing ng maraming biblical scholars na napakaaga; isang Society of Biblical Literature resource notes that Paulโ€™s summary predates the Gospel accounts and represents an early extant statement about resurrection appearances.

โ€ Totooโ€”kung ang assumption natin ay: Dead people cannot rise because dead people do not rise.

Luke 24:11 (ESV):
โ€œThese words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them.โ€

Matthew 28:17 (ESV):
โ€œAnd when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted.โ€

May resistance. May confusion. May doubt.

Luke 24:39 (ESV):
โ€œSee my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see.โ€

Sinabi rin ni Jesus:
โ€œFor a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.โ€

Sa Article II, sinasabi na si Jesus ay โ€œtruly arose from the deadโ€ at kinuha muli ang Kanyang katawan. At sa Article XVI, pinagtitibay ng Church ang resurrection of the dead.

Dito nagiging interesting ang usapan. Can history prove a miracle?

Kaya mahalagang maging intellectually honest.

Ang history ay maaaring magpakita ng evidence surrounding the resurrection claim, ngunit ang Christian confession na โ€œGod raised Jesus from the deadโ€ ay isang theological conclusion rooted in that testimony and received by faith.

1 Corinthians 15:17 (ESV):
โ€œAnd if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.โ€

It is at the heart of the gospel.

Ang krus ay mukhang pagkatalo. Si Jesus ay ipinako. Si Jesus ay namatay. Si Jesus ay inilibing.

Ngunit ang resurrection ang nagsasabing: Hindi nagwagi ang kamatayan.

Acts 2:24 (ESV):
โ€œGod raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.โ€

Ang resurrection ang divine declaration na:

โ€ Kundi: โ€œJesus is alive!โ€

Kapag Easter, madalas nating marinig: โ€œChrist is risen!โ€ At ang sagot: โ€œHe is risen indeed!

May resurrection of the dead. May restoration. May final victory over death. At dahil nabuhay si Christ, mayroon tayong dahilan upang umasa sa sarili nating resurrection.

1 Corinthians 15:20 (ESV):
โ€œBut in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.โ€

Ang Church of the Nazarene likewise confesses the resurrection of the dead and teaches that everlasting life is assured to those who savingly believe in and obediently follow Jesus Christ.

โ€œMay pag-asa kahit hindi ko naiintindihan.โ€
โ€œMay pag-asa kahit nagluluksa ako.โ€
โ€œMay pag-asa dahil buhay si Cristo.โ€

Ito ay hope in the middle of suffering.

Kaya ang resurrection ay may ethical consequence.

Kung buhay si Jesus:

Natututo tayong sumunod.
Natututo tayong magpatawad.
Natututo tayong magmahal.
Natututo tayong mamuhay nang may holiness.
Natututo tayong maglingkod.
Natututo tayong maging witnesses.

There is nothing wrong with being grateful for the Christian tradition in which we have found a spiritual home. We can appreciate our history, value our theological heritage, and faithfully live out the convictions of our denomination. As Nazarenes, we have a particular Wesleyan understanding of Scripture, grace, holiness, and Christian discipleship. These things matter.

But there is a question every Christian should occasionally ask: When I talk about my faith, do people hear more about my denomination โ€” or more about Jesus?

It is possible to become so familiar with our denominational identity that we unintentionally make the label bigger than the Lord. We can become proud of our church, our doctrine, our worship style, our history, or even our theological distinctives. We may know exactly why we are Nazarene, yet somehow forget that being Nazarene is not the destination. Christ is.

The Gospel does not call us to boast in our denominational name. It calls us to boast in Christ.

Paul encountered this problem in the early Church when believers began identifying themselves according to different leaders. Some said they belonged to Paul, others to Apollos, while others claimed another identity. Paul responded with a question that remains remarkably relevant: โ€œIs Christ divided?โ€ His concern was not simply about different personalities. He was confronting a deeper problem: when something that should point us toward Christ becomes a reason to divide, compete, or boast.

The same warning can apply to denominational identity today.

We can say, โ€œI am Nazarene,โ€ with gratitude without saying, โ€œNazarenes are better than everyone else.โ€ We can explain Wesleyan-Holiness theology without treating other Christians with contempt. We can treasure our doctrine without turning doctrine into a weapon. We can stand firmly for what we believe while remaining humble enough to listen, learn, and love.

That is particularly important for Nazarenes because holiness is not merely a doctrine we defend; it is a life we are called to embody.

In the Wesleyan-Nazarene understanding, holiness is deeply connected with God's transforming grace. God does not merely forgive us and leave us unchanged. His grace works in us, shaping our hearts and lives toward Christlike love. Entire sanctification is understood not as a badge of spiritual superiority but as God's gracious work of cleansing the heart from self-centeredness and empowering believers to love God wholeheartedly and others selflessly.

So if our doctrine of holiness makes us arrogant, we have misunderstood the very holiness we claim to proclaim.

If our knowledge of sanctification makes us look down on those who are still growing, we have missed its spirit.

If our denominational identity makes us less loving, less gracious, and less Christlike, then perhaps our identity has become more important to us than the Christ we claim to follow.

The Nazarene way should never lead us away from Christ. It should lead us deeper into Christ.

Our tradition gives us a particular language for talking about the Christian journey: prevenient grace, saving grace, sanctifying grace, holiness, Christian perfection, entire sanctification, and Christlike love. These are precious theological convictions. But they are not trophies to display. They are truths meant to shape a life.

And that life should ultimately point beyond ourselves.

When people encounter a truly Christ-centered Christian, they should not walk away thinking, โ€œWhat an impressive denomination.โ€

They should walk away thinking, โ€œWhat an impressive Savior.โ€

That is the difference between denominational pride and Christian witness.

There is a place for healthy denominational identity. It gives us community, history, accountability, shared mission, and theological language. It reminds us where we have come from and helps us understand how our particular Christian family seeks to follow Jesus.

But denominational identity should function like a signpost.

A signpost is useful because it points somewhere.

It would be absurd for a traveler to stop at the sign and say, โ€œLook at this wonderful sign!โ€ while forgetting the destination it identifies.

Our denomination is not the destination.

Christ is.

The Church of the Nazarene exists because of a particular calling to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ and to proclaim the possibility of a holy life through God's transforming grace. Our Wesleyan-Holiness heritage gives us something beautiful to contribute to the wider Body of Christ. But our contribution becomes distorted when we turn it into competition.

We do not need to diminish another Christian tradition to appreciate our own.

We do not need to criticize another church to explain why we are Nazarene.

We do not need to win every theological argument to faithfully proclaim Christ.

And we certainly do not need to boast about ourselves when the cross has already given us something infinitely greater to boast about.

Paul expressed it beautifully: โ€œBut far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.โ€ Galatians 6:14 ESV

That should be the heartbeat of every Christianโ€”and perhaps especially of every Christian movement that claims to exist for the sake of Christ.

So, yes, we can say, โ€œI am Nazarene.โ€

But let us also be able to say:

โ€œI am a follower of Jesus.โ€

And when the two ever come into competition, the second must always be greater.

Because before we were members of a denomination, we were sinners in need of grace.

Before we had a theological label, Christ loved us.

Before we understood sanctification, God was already pursuing us with prevenient grace.

Before we could boast about anything we had accomplished, Christ had already accomplished salvation for us.

And after everything else is stripped awayโ€”the buildings, programs, titles, traditions, denominational names, theological debates, and institutional achievementsโ€”Christ remains.

That is why the healthiest Nazarene identity is not one that constantly says, โ€œLook at us.โ€

It is one that says:

โ€œLook at Christ.โ€

Look at His grace.

Look at His holiness.

Look at His compassion.

Look at His cross.

Look at His resurrection.

Look at His transforming love.

And then, by His grace, let us become more like Him.

Perhaps that is the real test of our denominational identity:

Does being Nazarene help me become more like Jesus?

If the answer is yes, then let us be grateful for our heritage.

Let us treasure our Wesleyan-Holiness theology.

Let us proclaim holiness.

Let us serve our churches.

Let us disciple our children.

Let us reach our communities.

Let us preach the Gospel.

But through it all, let our greatest boast remain the same:

Not โ€œLook how great our denomination is.โ€

Butโ€”

โ€œLook how great Christ is.โ€

Because denominations have names.

Traditions have histories.

Churches have buildings.

Theologies have vocabulary.

But Jesus is Lord.

And ultimately, He is the One we are here to proclaim.

Journey of Grace

We are all still being shaped by grace. Prevenient grace meets us before we even know to look for God. Saving grace reconciles us to Him. Sanctifying grace continues the transforming work within us. And throughout the journey, the goal remains the same:

To become more like Christ.

So let our denominational identity never become a wall that separates us from other believers.

Let it instead become a particular way of helping us walk faithfully toward Jesus.

We are Nazarenes by tradition and conviction.
We are Christians by grace.
And we belong to Christ.

Soli Christo. โ€” To Christ alone be the glory.
