𝐅𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐄 | 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱, 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗳𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘀

The night falls heavy in Lahore, Pakistan, as a man walks home from the sewer, the weight of the day pulling at his every step. The path ahead is shrouded in darkness—just like the work he’s left behind, hidden beneath the city’s surface, where the light fades. He’s been down there in the muck, in the shadows of the city’s underbelly, where dangers lie in wait. Every step he took in those sewers could have been his last. Yet no one sees the price he pays to keep the city on track.

𝗔 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝘂𝘀𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗱

He is Shafique Massih, and as he approaches his home, he lifts his tired hand to knock. Each bruise and cut on his skin is a reminder of his day’s toll. His body aches, but the worst pain is the one that never shows—the exhaustion of doing work that only a countable number of people care about and the fear of toxic gases.

But there’s one thing that keeps him going—his family. They are his motivation. For them, he risks everything.

𝗔 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿

His daughter once required life-saving surgery, and he sacrificed everything to secure her care. Tragically, she did not survive, leaving a lasting weight of loss on him, but Shafique’s resolve remains. He keeps going; without a motorcycle and having debts, he walks 25 kilometers to work every day, all for his wife and son. But Shafique recalls having his son bullied and moving school, all because of one reason: his father is a sewage worker.

𝗔 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀

Having his father working as sanitation worker and his mother as a cleaner. Expectations of becoming one were never in Shafique’s head.

But Shafique knows that his life is a reflection of something bigger. His hands—scarred from years of working with broken glass and razor-sharp metal—might be dirty, but they are the hands that make it possible for others to live cleanly. Sharing, “No work is bad; it’s human mentality that needs to be changed.” He hopes for a future where his son won’t have to walk the same path in darkness and for a day when people will see him—not as a “choora” or “gutter cleaner,” but as a man doing the hardest, most necessary work to keep the community safe.

𝗔 𝗧𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹’𝘀 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁

As he walks away, the world around him continues as it always does—unaware, unseeing, but still relying on the hands that keep it clean. We may never know the names of the men and women who risk everything for the safety of others, but we should never forget that it is their work that allows us to live in comfort. They deserve more than just our gratitude. They deserve our respect.

It’s the story of millions of sanitation workers around the world, whose lives are sacrificed so that others can live without fear of disease or filth. But these workers, like Shafique, shouldn’t be covered in the dark—they are to be seen. For all of those who toil in the underground, where the light fades and shadows linger, their work is the foundation of everything we take for granted.

As Shafique walks away from the sewer at the end of another long day, he hopes for a future where people like him no longer have to fear for their safety, where their dignity is recognized, and their sacrifices are honored.

Kumusta ka? With the recent floods, talaga namang binabalik-balikan tayo ng bagyo, but for the meantime, let us acknowledge something na kinakalimutan pero lagi nating binabalik-balikan, kahit na sa school pa man. Today, we celebrate together 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗧𝗼𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 under the theme "𝑻𝒐𝒊𝒍𝒆𝒕𝒔: 𝑨 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑷𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒆." 🕊️🚽

Operating since 2003, UN-Water has been underscoring global efforts to address water and sanitation challenges. As extreme weather events become more frequent, remember what UN-Water has been reminding us: toilets are a place for peace, toilets protect our health and safety, and toilets are a platform for progress. ⛑️🚰

With our current condition, the risks associated with failing toilet systems are highlighted. When these systems are compromised, untreated waste can contaminate the environment and lead to health issues like cholera; therefore, it is important for all of us to advocate for resilient sanitation systems that ensure access to safe toilets for all. 🚽✨

Just like in relationships, Banyos also have their own standards! 🔱 In which we follow to prevent misunderstanding with the next person to use the restroom 🗿💦

When King Elijah told us to follow proper etiquette, he was referring to these guidelines; remember to always follow them before and after using restrooms! 🚽🧻 Otherwise, you won’t enjoy anymore using something you've never thought of cleaning before leaving. 😔

Just like a scene from a horror movie, the thought of using a public restroom can send chills down our spine! 😨 With Halloween just behind us, let’s face the real fright: the terrifying odour of unclean restrooms lurking in our campus! 🧟‍♂️

Did you know that public restrooms can harbour over 77,000 germs per square inch, making them a breeding ground for bacteria? (Harris, 2018). But here’s the twist: the average toilet seat is actually cleaner than many commonly touched surfaces, like door handles! (Graham et al., 2016). So while we might fear the ghostly smells, it’s the unseen germs—those ghostly bacteria—that can be even scarier! 👻

Therefore, let’s banish those clingy odours and create a safe haven! Join our 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐨 𝐂𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐍 campaign on 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞, 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐞𝐚𝐭. Here are some simple yet impactful measures we can all take to keep our campus restrooms clean:

1. 𝗙𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗵 𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗨𝘀𝗲: Always remember to flush the toilet—let’s not leave behind those ghostly germs lurking in surfaces!

2. 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗳𝗮𝘂𝗰𝗲𝘁𝘀: Don’t leave the faucet running; it wastes water and creates a mess.

3. 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘆: Only use what you need and dispose of it properly to avoid clogging and odours.

4. 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆: Use trash bins for paper towels and other waste—don’t let them pile up!

5. 𝗕𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀: If you see something out of place or dirty, take a moment to tidy up—every little effort counts!

Together, by following these simple steps, we can ensure our campus restrooms are not just functional but also free from the spooky odour and ghostly germs, a welcoming space—away from panghi! 🏫✨
