Wow

On this day in 1945, General Douglas MacArthur was granted honorary Filipino citizenship by the Philippine Congress in recognition of his leadership during the liberation of the Philippines in WWII. The MacArthur family has a long history with the Philippines: Arthur MacArthur Jr. fought against the Spanish and later became the US military advisor in 1900. Douglas MacArthur also held several important roles in the Philippines before helping liberate them from Japanese occupation. He was appointed commander of the Manila District in 1922, developed a close friendship with Manuel Quezon, became Field Marshal of the Philippines in 1935, and worked to protect the islands as tensions escalated leading up to the US entry in WWII. After the war ended, MacArthur left the Philippines to oversee the postwar occupation of Japan but returned in 1946 when the US granted the Philippines its independence.
